Did Dan Southworth just let the cat out of the bag AGAIN? During the Devil May Cry 25th Anniversary panel | Power Morphicon in late 2024, the voice behind the iconic Vergil may have inadvertently fueled speculation about an upcoming remake

In recently resurfaced footage, at the 38 minute mark, when asked about his recent work, Southworth responded with this:

In fact, I just finished a video game... three or four weeks ago. They hired me to play this character—I don't want to say any titles or anything because I'm known for spilling the beans, but they asked me to do my voice the way it was back in 2004—'Can you do the younger Vergil version?'. So that was challenging.

With that single statement, the rumor mill has been set ablaze. The most likely target? Devil May Cry 3, which not only featured Vergil’s speaking debut but also launched in 2005, aligning almost perfectly with Southworth’s reference to 2004.

Speculation about a remake makes sense, given Capcom’s recent track record. The publisher has seen massive success with its Resident Evil remakes, including Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 3 (2020), and Resident Evil 4 (2023). Each of these modernized classics has been met with critical and commercial success, making it logical for Capcom to extend this strategy to another one of its most beloved franchises.

If Devil May Cry 3 is indeed being remade, it could be yet another massive win for Capcom and gamers alike. The title is seen by some as one of the best action games of all time, praised for its deep combat system, stylish presentation, and introduction of Vergil as a playable character in the special edition version of the game. A remake would not only bring the game to a new generation of players but could also provide long-time fans with a fresh take on a classic. It could also give Capcom the chance to re-release the title to PC players without the porting issues that marred the release of the PC version of DMC3's Special Edition.

Could we be seeing a full-fledged revival of Devil May Cry 3 in the near future? Could a remake of DMC1 be in the works, with added content fleshing Vergil (Nelo Angelo) out with added voice lines? Could this be a new game altogether? For now, all we can do is wait and speculate. Capcom has remained silent on the matter. But with Southworth’s comment, and his self-admitted history of "spilling the beans", as well as the company’s proven interest in remakes, the possibility is tantalizing.
