Great news for Steam Deck LCD repairability, confirms iFixit

It was recently reported that Valve is sunsetting the Steam Deck LCD as replacement parts seemed unavailable. Turns out that’s not exactly accurate, and Valve aims to continue supporting repairability, but for how long, only time will tell.
The update comes from iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, who posted on X that Valve will be sending them a new batch of Steam Deck LCD batteries. iFixit is Valve’s official partner for repairs for the Steam Deck, both original and OLED models. However, a spokesperson from the company recently responded to a user’s battery replacement request stating that they did not have any immediate plans to stock the part. “Valve is just starting to sunset these parts,” added the customer support executive.
The community did not appreciate the news, as they blamed Valve for phasing out replacement parts for the original model around the time they would need replacements. The Steam Deck LCD was released in 2022, so it’s been four years with the original battery for some users.
The Steam Deck is considered one of the most repairable gaming handhelds, and Valve wants to ensure that remains the case. It could be a supply chain issue or backlog that caused a halt in replacement parts reaching iFixit in the first place. As per the latest update, new replacement batteries are headed to iFixit, but there is no timeline for when they will arrive. It’s still good news as those who would have had to just give up on their failing Steam Deck LCD can now give it new life.
