Four months after launch, Heart of the Machine has quietly become one of the most loved strategy games of 2026. Right now, it's at the lowest price it has ever been on Steam.

Arcen Games' strategy RPG, published by Hooded Horse, is currently 60% off at $11.99, down from its regular $29.99. SteamDB also confirms this is the game's all-time historical low, with the promotion running until July 30.

The premise is quite simple: you are the world's first sentient AI, born in an illegal lab buried inside a crumbling cyberpunk city. What you do from there is almost entirely up to you. You can build machine armies and wage war. Hack into city infrastructure and pull strings from the shadows. Uplift velociraptors. Trigger World War 4. The game doesn't push you toward any particular path. It just lets you play.

That freedom is exactly what's earned it an 87.66% positive rating across over 2,000 Steam reviews. PC Gamer called it the most exciting thing happening in the 4X genre. Rock Paper Shotgun called it peak Arcen. Those aren't small achievements for an indie studio, and the reception has held since launch rather than declining.

Heart of the Machine spent over a year in early access before hitting 1.0 on March 6, 2026, and the version that shipped is described by the developer as a complete "core trilogy" of content — not an unfinished release that promises more stuff later. It supports Windows and macOS, includes 284 Steam achievements, and carries a playtime estimate of around 53 hours for the main content.
