Google shows off 7 brand new emojis on World Emoji Day, with "Emoji Kitchen" now available via Google Search
Google celebrated World Emoji Day on July 17th with a look back at its emojis and a peek into upcoming features. Users can expect to see seven new emoji characters arrive in September 2024. These additions, part of the Unicode 16.0 release, include a fingerprint, leafless tree, harp, splat, face with bags under eyes, shovel, and root vegetable.
While these emoji will be available as web fonts in September, a slower rollout is planned for mobile devices and Google products. Android phone users can expect to see them by March 2025, with integration into other Google products arriving in early 2025.
Google also announced the continued growth of Emoji Kitchen, a feature within Gboard that allows users to combine two emoji into a single sticker. Since its launch in 2020, Emoji Kitchen has grown to include over 100,000 unique combinations.
Now, Google Search has a new way for its users to explore Emoji Kitchen. Users can search for "emoji kitchen" to access a "combine" tab where they can create custom mashups, or an "explore" tab that showcases pre-made combinations for any single emoji.
YouTube Shorts creators will soon have access to a new Emoji Kitchen Effect, allowing them to incorporate emoji mashups into their videos. Google Maps is also getting an emoji upgrade. Users will be able to customize saved locations with emoji icons and react to photos with static or AI-generated emoji based on the image content.
