Google Pixel smartphones get 'Repair Mode' and diagnostic app
In a blog entry, Google has announced a series of repair upgrades for Pixel smartphones up to the Pixel 8 Pro, starting with the brand new Pixel Repair Mode, which will be distributed as part of the December 2023 Pixel Feature Drop.
Similarly to Samsung's Repair Mode, personal data is locked when Repair Mode is activated and deactivated via password. This means that a Pixel smartphone can be sent for repair without giving the technician access to personal data, while not locking him/her out of the smartphone completely so as to allow the possible testing of functions.
A new Pixel Diagnostic app, which is initially only available in the USA, allows users to identify a wide range of possible defects and, after a repair, to easily check whether these defects have actually been corrected. This app is also handy for checking repairs carried out by owners themselves. To make repairs easier for users, Google is now offering a series of new repair manuals.
Furthermore, suitable tools can now be ordered from Shyft Global Services, although original spare parts will continue to be sold exclusively via the iFixit online shop. However, many of these spare parts are hardly cheaper than having a repair carried out by experts - a display for the Pixel 8 Pro costs around $229.99, a triple camera is available for $199.99, and a battery costs $42.99. The folding display of the Pixel Fold even costs $899.99.
