Google Pixel Watch 4 gets potentially life-saving feature from the Pixel Watch 5
The Google Pixel Watch 5 ($399 on Amazon) was officially unveiled on Wednesday. One of the most exciting new features is now also available on the Pixel Watch 4 following a software update, the so-called Breathing Emergency Detection. Following cardiac arrest detection and satellite emergency calls, this is another "Health Guardian" feature that has the potential to save lives.
As Google explains in a blog post, the Pixel Watch uses data from the PPG sensor, the accelerometer, and the barometer to detect whether the smartwatch wearer is still breathing. The fact that it not only measures blood oxygen saturation but also takes into account whether the user is still moving is intended to reduce false emergency calls. Since sleep disorders such as sleep apnea can also lead to false positives, this feature is disabled during sleep.
If the Pixel Watch detects a breathing pause, it alerts the user with strong vibrations and an alarm tone so that the user can respond in the event of a false detection and dismiss the notification. If the user is unconscious and unable to respond, the emergency call is automatically dialed after a 30-second countdown, either via the connected smartphone or directly via the smartwatch’s LTE modem.
The emergency dispatch center is notified via a computer-generated voice that a breathing pause has been detected and that the Pixel Watch wearer is no longer responding, and precise location data is also provided. However, the feature must be manually enabled in the settings; it is currently disabled by default. Respiratory arrest detection is now available on the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5, though only in select European countries, not yet in the USA.
