Gaudio Lab has launched the Just Voice Recorder app that uses AI to completely eliminate background noise for clean voice recordings. This application allows news reporters, filmmakers, and anyone wanting to capture clean voice recordings to do so without cumbersome lavalier, handheld, or shotgun microphones.
In the past, the only way to capture clean voice recordings in noisy environments was to place a microphone close to the mouth. On film sets, shotgun mics are often held on long boom poles over an actor. On news broadcasts, reporters hold handheld microphones. This all requires additional equipment, connectors, and cabling.
On modern smartphones, multiple, built-in microphones are used together in an attempt to cancel out background noise. The speaker’s voice will reach one of the microphones sooner than the others, and this difference allows the audio recording system to filter out much of the background noise that reaches all of the microphones at about the same time. However, there are some background sounds that reach the microphones at different times similar to a speaker’s voice, so the system can’t filter out those noises.
AI can be trained on thousands of recordings of voices in noise-free and noisy environments. By doing this, the AI learns to “hear” only a speaker’s voice even in a noisy place much like how humans can concentrate on what one person is saying despite many other people talking and noises nearby.
Just Voice Recorder uses Gaudio’s AI sound source separation along with sound leveling technologies to separate the voice from background noise, then ensure the entire recording plays back at a comfortable, even sound level. The app works on live and prior recordings, and all data remains private on-device.
The app can be downloaded for Apple iOS devices today and will be available later for Android devices. Readers on Android can buy a professional mini-shotgun microphone for their phones while they wait.
