Garmin’s Descent X50i wearable dive computer recently received the system software 3.18 update. Released in November 2024, this premium model joins the brand’s existing Descent models like the Descent G1 and the Descent Mk3, though with a larger 3-inch display.
The stable software version 3.18 is the first release for the Descent X50i. According to the change log, the wearable now supports the new S1 SubWave Buoy accessory. Linked to this, you can now opt in or out of Messaging and Location Sharing when you pair a buoy or transmitter. Plus, the wearable gains a reboot warning if water is detected within 45 seconds of powering down.
Garmin indicates that it has made it easier to back swipe on the device, and has also improved the behaviour of the touch panel, though it does not provide further details. The release notes indicate that users can no longer tap the device to turn on the backlight automatically at the surface; you can still press the touch screen or buttons to trigger the light. Another backlight-related change is for the timeout length, which is reduced to 15 seconds to preserve the battery. On top of this, there is a series of in-dive changes and bug fixes, all of which are listed in the change log (below).
System software 3.18 is now available for all users of the Garmin Descent X50i wearable dive computer (curr. $1,499.99 at Amazon). When connected to your smartphone, the update should reach your wearable automatically via the Garmin Device app. It can also be installed via the Garmin Express software, or on the watch by going to PREV > Settings > System > Check for Updates.
