Garmin has announced that it has removed the latest beta build for the Fenix 7 series, which it started rolling out yesterday. Apparently, Beta Version 14.28 breaks Bluetooth and wireless connectivity for some smartwatches, with up to 10% of models affected so far.

Earlier this week, Garmin introduced Beta Version 14.27 for the Fenix 7 series and its variations, including Enduro 2 and Epix 2 smartwatches. As we discussed at the time, Garmin had bundled various changes from Beta Version 14.26, including 15 bug fixes. Yesterday, the company released Beta Version 14.28, which contained nearly as many fixes and improvements as its predecessor. For reference, Beta Version 14.28 carries the following changelog:

  • Fix possible shutdown when using weather radar.
  • Fixed issues with watch face calendar data field.
  • Fixed possible empty page in Tides widget.
  • Fixed possible issue when creating a custom multisport activity.
  • Fixed possible issue where dashed average line would not draw correctly on some charts.
  • Fixed possible issue with altimeter after a swimming activity.
  • Fixed possible shutdown after saving an activity.
  • Fixed shutdown when using workouts app with no workouts available on the device.
  • Fixed stress chart possibly being empty in a gaming activity.
  • Improve "Delete Data and Reset Settings" processing to complete faster.
  • Improve messaging of pending CIQ items during a device restore.
  • Improve Red Shift handling for "After Sunset".
  • Improve Workouts app to not be available when an activity is already recording.
  • Update auto lap page layout when displayed during a workout.
  • Updated translations.

However, it has since pulled Beta Version 14.28 update. In a forum post, the company explains that the build contained an undocumented change that it had designed to prevent issues where its wireless software would fail to update. Reportedly, this bug fix did not operate as intended and prevented a smartwatch from functioning as normal.

While the issue is not a critical one, Garmin has elected to pull Beta Version 14.28 'to avoid any additional users from getting in a bad state'. Apparently, Beta Version 14.29 will resolve the outstanding problem, which Garmin hopes to issue 'as soon as we can'. The company adds that while fewer than 10% of users have encountered the issue so far, it has opened a support thread to resolve it more quickly than waiting for Beta Version 14.29.
