Garmin smartwatches like the Fenix 8 can now track nutritional intake. In addition to total calories, macronutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrates) are also recorded, while "Active Intelligence" is designed to help users achieve their nutritional goals.

The Garmin nutrition tracking feature is designed to make it easy to keep track of your diet. When you consume a food item, you can simply scan it using the Garmin Connect smartphone app, either by scanning the barcode or by holding the dish itself in front of the camera, which will recognize it using AI.

Home-cooked meals and favorite dishes can be stored in the app for quicker access. Foods stored in this way can also be selected directly on a Garmin smartwatch without having to take your smartphone out of your pocket. On selected smartwatches such as the Fenix 8, the nutrition log can be opened via voice command.

Garmin Connect then displays daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports showing how calorie and nutrient intake changes over time and how well you are progressing toward your health goals. Garmin calculates your ideal intake of calories, protein, fat and carbohydrates based on your height, weight, gender, activity level and total calorie expenditure.

A feature called "Active Intelligence" is designed to identify direct correlations, such as how eating at night can negatively impact sleep or how different foods affect a workout.

Price and availability

The Garmin nutrition log is now available, but only for users of compatible smartwatches who have a Garmin Connect+ subscription. This subscription costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
