The Thaumaturge combines an unusual historical setting with supernatural creatures and far-reaching choices. The story-driven RPG is now available on Steam for $10.50 for the first time.

The Thaumaturge is a story-driven RPG that combines historical events with supernatural fantasy. Anyone who enjoys story-heavy RPGs with unusual settings and has not played the game yet currently has the best opportunity to pick it up on Steam so far. The 2022 title from Fool's Theory and 11 bit studios is currently 70% off, bringing the price down to around $10.50 from $35. According to SteamDB, this marks a new all-time low for the RPG.

The Thaumaturge is set in Warsaw in 1905, where political unrest and social conflict collide with a hidden supernatural world. The story revolves around Wiktor Szulski – a so-called thaumaturge. The term comes from Greek and, put simply, refers to a person who possesses supernatural powers. Wiktor is able to track down and control creatures known as Salutors. These are demonic beings from Slavic folklore that attach themselves to human weaknesses and emotions.

The game's central goal is to uncover Wiktor's personal story and the secrets surrounding his family. Along the way, players investigate supernatural incidents, track down Salutors and become increasingly entangled in Warsaw's political and social conflicts. They also encounter the occasional historical figure, such as Grigori Rasputin or Tsar Nicholas II. In terms of gameplay, The Thaumaturge is an isometric story-driven RPG focused on investigations, dialogue and choices. Wiktor can read other people's thoughts and emotional states, unlocking new dialogue options or ways to resolve situations. There is also exploration, side quests and turn-based combat, in which Wiktor fights alongside his Salutors against enemies.

German gaming magazine PC Games particularly praises the unusual historical setting, dense atmosphere and well-written story with interesting characters and meaningful choices. The idea of using Salutors in combat is also well received. The review primarily identifies weaknesses in the combat system, which becomes repetitive over time, the relatively undemanding detective work and the fairly limited role-playing mechanics. Overall, the game earns a solid 7 out of 10. Around 82% of its roughly 5,900 Steam reviews are positive. On Metacritic, the RPG has a Metascore of 74 and a User Score of 7.1. One advantage for handheld gamers: The title is Steam Deck Verified.
