Fairphone is known for its pursuit of sustainable and repairable tech, and the brand has finally entered the US market. This comes at a time when the ‘right to repair’ movement has been picking up steam in the US. The first product Fairphone is bringing is not a smartphone, however, but over the ear headphones that were initially launched back in 2023.
With a limited portfolio of products, Fairphone is currently on the sixth generation of its titular Fairphone. The Fairphone 6 is made from 50% recycled materials, has a modular design, and is produced under fair conditions. It is one of the highest repairability phones according to iFixit. The Fairbuds XL over the ear headphones take the same approach. They are made from 92% recycled aluminium, are 100% e-waste neutral, modular, and have a swappable battery.
The Fairbuds XL launched in the European market for €249 and while the company has not shared US pricing as of yet, they can be expected to cost around $280 and will be sold in partnership with Amazon. At the time of writing, there is no listing on the retailer website and no timeline has been shared by the company.
According to Reuters, Fairphone is preparing for its first official smartphone launch in the US. Talking about the right to repair movement, Chief executive Raymond van Eck said, “Our strategy is built for uncertainty. The tariffs weather may change daily, but the demand signal in the U.S. is clear.” Notably, the Fairphone 6 can be purchased in the US through Murena but at a premium price of $899, when the European pricing is €599 (around $688). With the partnership with Amazon and official US market entry, hopefully the pricing will be more approachable.
