With the PlayStation 5 set for a Holiday 2020 release, it will probably be a while until we see what the retail model looks like. That hasn’t stopped MediaMarkt Saturn, a European retail chain, from making their own renders.
Before we proceed, please take these renders with the contents of an entire salt mine. The images released by MediaMarkt Saturn should be considered more of a fan concept and are in no way official.
However, MediaMarkt Saturn’s renders look raise some interesting points. There are two USB Type-C ports mounted on the front of the box, as well as a top-mounted wireless charging system for the DualShock 5 controllers. These controllers essentially look like DualShock 4 controllers with a massive touchscreen mounted in the middle. Lastly, the renders claim that the PlayStation 5 will be fully backward compatible with all games released on prior PlayStation versions.
This last point is highly unlikely to happen based on the sheer amount of hardware that would be needed to support PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 games, and software emulation for those consoles hasn’t progressed to a viable state. However, the touchscreen-equipped controllers were rumored in the past, and the video makes claims that have largely been confirmed, such as the high-speed SSD and Zen-based components.
Of course, this is probably not the PlayStation 5, but it is fun to see concepts and renders. It’s just odd that these renders come from an established European retail conglomerate.
