PlayStation 4 becomes second best-selling console of all time
The PlayStation 4 is nearing the end of its life, but it recently topped one more summit. The PS4 is now the second best-selling home console of all time.
Sony announced it sold 2.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles this quarter, bringing the total number of PS4’s sold to 102.8 million. That just edges out Sony’s original PlayStation (102.49 million) and the Nintendo Wii (101.63 million). The PS4 is unlikely to come anywhere close to the reigning champion, the PlayStation 2, which sold over 155 million units during its run.
It should also be mentioned that the PS4 is technically the second best-selling home console, as the Game Boy/Game Boy Color and Nintendo DS both sold more units during their lifespans. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color collectively sold 118 million units, while the Nintendo DS ultimately sold 154 million units. We should also note that the total sales numbers listed for the PS4 include both the standard PS4 as well as the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro.
Still, this is great news for Sony. The company may be struggling in some areas (particularly its mobile division), but it knows how to make an excellent video game console. The original PlayStation (PSX) sold 102.49 million units and the PS2 sold over 155 million units. Even the PS3, in spite of its slow start, ultimately edged out the Xbox 360 and sold 87.4 million units.
Sony is expected to release the PlayStation 5 during the holiday season of 2020, so the PS4 has a bit more time to sell units. Black Friday will likely give the PS4 a final pop in sales as retailers begin the process of clearing out their stock. Time will tell if the PS5 can generate the same revenue as Sony’s other consoles.
