Epic Games Store to arrive on Android and iOS later this year
Not too long ago, Epic Games laid off over 870 employees in a bid to be profitable. The Steam competitor just announced that it will launch on Android and iOS soon. However, Epic Games' announcement is bereft of details and raises more questions than it answers. For starters, it doesn't state if the availability will be global or just limited to some regions.
Apple's decision to terminate (and subsequently reinstate) Epic's developer account suggests it might only land in the EU as a third-party app store, at least on iOS. Android users, on the other hand, should have no trouble sideloading the APK should it not be available officially in their region. Next, the X post doesn't specify if the Epic Games Store will serve as a full-fledged storefront or as a companion app like Steam.
Given the company's history, it is probably the former. Epic Games confirmed it will let developers keep 88% of their earnings, much higher than the 70% they get on the Google Play Store/Apple App Store.Lastly, Epic Games doesn't mention when its storefront will be available on either platform other than "later this year".
Even its teaser image calls the UI "concept only", meaning it could be a while. Then there's the question of which games will be available via the Epic Games Store. Fortnite seems like a no-brainer but it will have to be supplemented by other exclusives to make a splash in the already saturated mobile gaming space.
