Elecom brings a unique wireless gaming mouse that uses an ultra-wideband connection instead of the busy 2.4 GHz. With this UWB connection, Elecom claims its VM800 is the world’s first true 8K polling mouse.

The trend of 8K gaming peripherals, particularly gaming mice, was popularized by Razer with its Viper 8KHz back in 2021. Since then, there have been quite a few options that claim to offer 8K polling over a 2.4 GHz connection. Elecom, however, claims that its VM800 is the world’s first true 8K wireless gaming mouse since it transmits and receives at 8,000 Hz and is unincumbered by 2.4 GHz interference.

Elecom VM800 specifications and features

The VM800 features the PAW3950 sensor that is capable of 30,000 DPI, a maximum speed of 750 IPS, and an acceleration of 50G. It is a lightweight mouse coming in at just 59 grams for the medium size and 64 grams for the large. Speaking of size, the medium variant is 66 mm wide, 41 mm high, and 122 mm long. The large variant, on the other hand, is 70 mm wide, 43 mm high, and 130 mm long.

What sets it apart from the competition is the fact that it uses an ultra-wideband (UWB) connection between the mouse and the receiver, rather than the typical 2.4 GHz. Elecom states that this leads to a more stable connection since there is no interference, which is the case with 2.4 GHz bands since there are multiple other devices on the same band. UWB operates at frequencies between 7.25 and 9.30 GHz which, in most scenarios, will be a free and open space since no other device connects at that frequency. This does come at the cost of range which is capped at 1.5 meters.

Furthermore, the mouse sends data 8,000 times a second and the receiver picks up data at the same frequency, which is not always true for other 8K gaming mice.

That being said, there are only a handful of games that support 8K polling rates so only gamers who play a lot of Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, DOTA 2, League of Legends, and a few other competitive titles would benefit from such a high polling rate. For everyone else, a 1,000 Hz polling mouse would be sufficient. 8K polling also consumes a lot of battery and while the VM800 claims 100 hours of battery life, that’s at 1,000 Hz, with no information on how long it would last at 8K.

As for the design, the VM800 is an ergonomic mouse with a sideways curve that adds an extra bulge to the right side and a dip to the left. There are six total buttons and the mouse sits on 1 mm thick high-purity PTFE feet. It comes in black and white colors and the receiver is a cube with RGB lighting inside.

Elecom VM800 price and availability

As of now, the VM800 only seems to be available in Japan and Elecom has not shared any information on global availability. It is priced at 19,980 YEN which is about $136 USD. There are quite a few 8K options available in the US market for that price but none that offer a UWB connection.
