Outdoor digital signage usually means bright LED panels or power-hungry LCD screens - but E Ink is taking a somewhat different route. Its newest display tech, dubbed E Ink Marquee, is capable of handling vibrant color output without constant energy drain. What makes it stand out isn’t just the improved color rendering, it’s the fact that it works in a wide temperature range, from -20°C up to 65°C.
Marquee is built for what’s called “Digital Out of Home” or DOOH signage - those paper-like displays used in restaurants, transport hubs, or storefronts. It can be made in sizes up to 75 inches, and depending on content, updates take as little as 5–7 seconds. Unlike LCD or LED, which constantly draw power to maintain an image, E Ink displays are reflective and only use power when the screen changes - so they’re a lot more power-efficient.
The Marquee series uses a four-pigment system for better color output than earlier E Ink tech, and it's being positioned as a low-maintenance, sunlight-readable option for signage that doesn't need to be constantly animated. Reports further state that Marquee will target places where durability, energy savings, and readability matter more than high refresh rates or interactivity.
While it's still in development, E Ink plans to showcase Marquee next month at Display Week in California (May 11-16). A preview of the tech will also be shown during Touch Taiwan 2025 (April 16–18). Several demo panels - some featuring restaurant-style visuals - have already been spotted at early exhibitions.
E Ink Marquee isn’t going to fully replace LCD menus or LED walls anytime soon, but for companies looking to reduce operating costs or deploy signage in rougher outdoor environments, this tech definitely looks like a practical step forward.
