Dynabook Satellite Pro C50D laptop in review - Office computer with AMD Ryzen

With the Satellite Pro C50D, Dynabook (formerly Toshiba) presents an inexpensive office computer in a 15.6-inch format that is supposed to cover the basic needs in companies. Due to the high sales figures, this segment is highly competitive and virtually all manufacturers offer suitable devices here. Compared to the old Satellite Pro C50-E, which we tested with an Intel processor in 2020, Dynabook now relies on mobile processors from AMD.
We test the Satellite Pro C50D-B-115 for an MSRP of 729 Euro (~$760), which uses the AMD Ryzen 5 5600U with 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Optionally, a better-equipped model with an MSRP of 899 Euros (~$938) is also available, which then features 16 GB of RAM, a larger 512 GB SSD and the Ryzen 7 5800U. Both versions use the same matte IPS display with Full HD resolution.

Case, equipment & input devices
The Satellite Pro's dark blue case is made of plastic. When handling the device, the low price is noticeable as the display lid is quite flexible and image distortions quickly occur when the display is twisted a bit. The workmanship and the stability of the base unit are okay, but the hinges are a bit stiff and the screen teeters a bit. When you open it, you also wonder if this is a device from 2022, because the 16:9 screen is flanked by massive screen edges.
The bottom cover is secured with normal cross screws and the maintenance options are overall decent, because there are also two regular SODIMM slots next to the M.2-2280 SSD, which makes it very easy to upgrade the working memory. However, the WLAN module cannot be replaced.
The Satellite Pro still offers a microSD reader, but it is very slow. You also have to make do with the standard fare in terms of ports. At least the USB-C port also supports the power supply and screen output. The Wi-Fi module uses Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which is also clearly visible in the transfer rates with our reference router. Compared to modern Wi-Fi 6 modules, the Dynabook clearly falls behind. A normal 720p camera is used as the webcam, which does not provide good picture quality.
The 15.6-inch model of the Satellite Pro offers a full keyboard including a number pad, which also works very precisely, but the key drop is only average and the keystrokes are very loud overall. In terms of typing feel, the competitors like the ThinkBook offer better keyboards, and the Dynabook's keyboard is not illuminated. The large clickpad is also very precise and worked satisfactorily in the test, but we also noticed the very loud clicking noises when you really press down on the clickpad.

Display - Matte IPS panel
The matte IPS display of the Satellite Pro C50D comes from the supplier ChiMei and the subjective picture impression is okay, but you immediately notice that it is a very cheap IPS panel in the rather pale colors. However, the image content is at least displayed sharply because even bright content is not grainy at all despite the matte surface.
With an average brightness of just over 250 cd/m² (maximum 271 cd/m² in the center of the screen) it should still be sufficient for most office spaces, and thanks to the low black value, there is at least a very good contrast ratio of just under 1600:1. However, the screen clearly struggles with halos along the edges in dark content. The response times are typical and we could not detect any PWM flickering.

* ... smaller is better
We measured the panel with the professional CalMAN software (i1 Pro 2) and there is only a slight color cast in the direction of green/blue in the delivery state, but it can be fixed with our calibration (profile is available for free download above). However, the maximum brightness drops by about 25 cd/m². What we cannot fix, however, are the high color deviations and together with the low color space coverage, reasonable image editing is not possible here. However, this is not the Satellite Pro's target field and the screen is quite usable for normal office applications.

Performance - AMD Zen 3 in the office computer
Our Dynabook test device of the C50D is equipped with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600U which is a 6-core processor from the Cezanne generation. However, this is only combined with 8 GB of RAM in single-channel mode, which primarily affects the graphics performance of the integrated Vega 7. However, the Ryzen 5 certainly offers sufficient performance for normal office tasks.
Dynabook is quite conservative in the processor's TDP configuration. The maximum is 28 watts for a short time, then around 22 watts and only 12 watts after about 1.5 minutes. Thus, the Dynabook offers better rates than the Intel competition in terms of pure multi-core performance, but the advantage is usually not that big in single-core performance, which often plays a bigger role in everyday use, and you will not notice a difference in everyday use.
The subjective performance impression in everyday use is very good overall because inputs are implemented without noticeable delays. This impression is also confirmed by the synthetic benchmarks, in which the review sample is often ahead of the competition.
The PCIe-SSD, which comes from Samsung and offers a storage capacity of 256 GB (184 GB are available to the user after the first start-up), has a significant share in this. The PM991a (PCIe-3.0-x4) is a very fast drive and reaches up to 3.1 GB/s, but the performance drops a bit after a short time. However, this does not matter in everyday use.
Graphics output is completely handled by the processor's integrated graphics card. The RX Vega7 offers sufficient performance for everyday office use and can also handle high-resolution videos without problems, but it cannot use its full potential due to the single-channel RAM configuration. Therefore, the Dynabook is not suitable for gaming.

Emissions & battery life
The Satellite Pro C50D is usually a very quiet computer under low load, but the compact fan also starts up quickly. You can hardly hear the noise on the first levels, but it quickly gets relatively loud for the given performance when you put the laptop under more load. If you load the laptop permanently, the fan noise also reduces again as soon as the CPU has leveled off at 12 watts.
The surface temperatures remain uncritical even under load, so you don't have to worry here. The two stereo speakers can get relatively loud, but the overall sound quality is very weak and we definitely recommend headphones or external speakers if you want to listen to some music or show video clips during presentations, for example.
The Dynabook proves to be very efficient in the energy measurements and the compact 45-watt power supply is also completely sufficient. Furthermore, the 45.6-Wh battery enables decent battery runtimes. In our WLAN test, it lasted almost 9 hours at 150 cd/m² and still 7 hours at full screen brightness. The comparison devices have to be plugged in earlier here.
