Dragon Quest Smash/Grow launches April 21, 2026, on iOS and Android as a free roguelite RPG from Square Enix and KLabGames, featuring randomised Blessing runs and four-player co-op.

Square Enix and KLabGames bring the Dragon Quest franchise to mobile with a fast-paced roguelite built around randomised runs and co-op play. Dragon Quest Smash/Grow launches on iOS and Android on April 21, 2026.

The game is free to play with in-app purchases and is co-developed by Square Enix and KLabGames. Players who pre-registered will receive 10 Premium Transmuter pulls at launch.

Rouguelite meets Dragon Quest

Smash/Grow is a roguelite action RPG that takes the Dragon Quest franchise in a very different direction from its mainline entries. Each run drops you into a Rift, a dungeon crawling with monster waves and a powerful creature called an Alpha waiting at the bottom.

You tap and hold to move, release to attack, and watch your Coup de Grâce gauge build until you can unleash an attack powerful enough to clear the room.

The core mechanic that drives each run is the Blessing system. Blessings are randomised power-ups that reshuffle every stage, adding effects such as fireballs and electrified weapon strikes that automatically hit enemies. Mixing and matching Blessings is what gives each run its identity, ensuring no two playthroughs feel identical.

Party and vocations

Players form a party of three characters and can switch between them mid-battle to exploit the strengths of different vocations. Classic Dragon Quest vocations return here, each with its own upgrade trees and weapon preferences. Blessings are shared across the full party rather than locked to individual characters.

Modes

Outside the main story, Smash/Grow includes co-op quests for up to four players, a Gauntlet mode for endless waves of enemies, and Shrine encounters focused on powerful boss fights. The game's story begins with Chapter 1, titled Send 'Em Flying! Slime Invasion.

Developer history

Series creator Yuji Horii is serving as supervisor on the project. Horii launched the original Dragon Quest in 1986, and this release lands during the franchise's 40th anniversary year. The opening trailer was produced by Kamikaze Douga.

Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is not the only major mobile gaming event this month. Wuthering Waves Version 3.3 lands on April 30 with six crossover collaborations, 40 free pulls, and a brand new area to explore as the game marks its second anniversary.
