NVIDIA launched the RTX 4070 last month at an MSRP of US$599, a significant US$100 more than the RTX 3070. According to various independent reviews, the RTX 4070 offers rasterization performance that is in line with the RTX 3080. However, despite the obvious performance bump over its predecessor, it appears the sales of the GPU might be disappointing if the newest report out of ITHome is any indication.
First spotted by @harukaze5719 on Twitter, ITHome alleges that, due to bad RTX 4070 sales, NVIDIA decided to halt the supply of the GPUs to Add-in Card (AIC) partners at the end of April. This supposed delivery cut was meant to last for a month whereby AICs would start getting fresh RTX 4070 supply by the end of May. However, NVIDIA may now have extended the supply cut into June to keep the price of the board from falling.
While we don’t know if ITHome’s report is accurate, one look around the major US retailers is enough to see that the RTX 4070 cards aren’t exactly flying off the shelves. For instance, at the time of writing, there are plenty of RTX 4070 models on sale on Newegg and Best Buy at or close to the US$599 MSRP.
The supposedly disappointing sales of the RTX 4070 are easily understood if we look at the competition. For instance, the RX 6800 XT which performs similarly to the RTX 4070 while boasting more VRAM can be had for as low as US$510 from Newegg. Additionally, the RX 6950 XT, a board that performs considerably better than the RTX 4070, is available around the US$630 mark on Newegg currently.
Put simply, the RTX 4070 might simply not be offering the price/performance advantage that consumers are looking for resulting in low demand for the GPU.
