In a surprising twist, Deltarune, Toby Fox’s highly anticipated follow-up to cult-classic Undertale, has claimed the top spot on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop’s digital sales charts for June. The game’s sales (in raw numbers, not net revenue) have even outpaced Nintendo’s flagship launch title, Mario Kart World, on its digital storefront.
According to data compiled by Newzoo from six markets: the U.S., UK, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, Deltarune has taken the lead in digital sales, which is staggering for a third-party title on Nintendo’s platform.
Deltarune’s Chapters 1 and 2, being free-to-play, garnered significant traction, and the complete four chapters were released on day one on the Nintendo Switch 2 for $25. Mario Kart World landed in third place, with an unexpected runner-up in the top charts, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour.
Somewhat less surprisingly, Mario Kart World dominated in Nintendo eShop revenue metrics, followed by Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, Cyberpunk 2077, No Man’s Sky, and last but not least, Welcome Tour.
Mario Kart World’s higher revenue lead can be attributed to its higher price point, in addition to many users picking up the title with the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch. 82% of U.S. buyers picked up the game along with the new handheld. Mario Kart World also had the most monthly active users across both the Switch and Switch 2, surpassing even a staple title like Fortnite, followed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Other Nintendo Switch first-party titles saw a generous boost in monthly active users, due to the Switch 2’s graphical upgrades. These titles include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and Mortal Kombat 11.
These metrics just go to show that third-party games are in high demand on the Nintendo Switch 2, opening the floodgates for third-party franchises and indie developers to bring their titles to the platform. The tides are turning on Nintendo’s new hardware as third-party titles are dethroning Nintendo’s first-party games.
