Dubbed "Sauropod" and unleashed yesterday, TileOS 2.0 is a Debian 13-based Linux release that also comes with the desktop-optimized Liquorix kernel as an option. A Niri and a MiracleWM edition join the Sway, River, and Qtile flavors. TileOS 2.0 also sports multiple package updates and substitutions.

One of the younger Debian-based distros, TileOS, is back with a new stable release that focuses on offering two new Wayland tiling compositors alongside multiple updated pieces of code. Labeled 2.0 and dubbed "Sauropod," this distro hails from Russia and comes with the native Debian 13 Stable kernel as the default. However, those who want a system with optimizations for typical desktop tasks can choose to install the Liquorix kernel instead. Before moving to the other highlights, it should be noted that the default kernel comes with Secure Boot support.

TileOS 2.0 also sports the following highlights:

  • Rust-based sudo-rs has become the new default.
  • Dnsmasq was replaced with systemd-resolved.
  • The isc-dhcp-client was removed, being replaced by dhcpd5.
  • The tileos-kernel-manager for installing and removing kernels was added.
  • The initial setup and distro familiarization utility, TileOS Welcome, was also added.
  • Improved video acceleration alongside preinstalled components for Intel QuickSync Video support.
  • Notifications are now displayed using the SwayOSD utility.
  • Niri and MiracleWM editions, both in the experimental stage for now, have been added.

In addition to the above, there are several other new and updated components. All the release notes are available in the source link further down the page.

While the source code is also available for download, those who want to take this distro for a quick spin can grab one of the ISO files available, each for one of the Wayland tiling compositors available for TileOS, namely Sway, River, Qtile, Niri, and MiracleWM. All ISOs have roughly 2.25 GB in size and can be found on this page.
