Dead or Alive 6: Last Round has launched to heavy criticism on Steam, with players citing a costly DLC structure, limited upgrade options, delisting of the original release, and missing features such as rollback netcode and cross-play. While reviewers acknowledge the underlying fighting mechanics remain strong, many argue the re-release is undermined by aggressive monetization and insufficient value for returning players.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the long-running Dead or Alive fighting game series is back with a re-release of its sixth entry, called Dead or Alive 6: Last Round. However, the launch is off to a rather bumpy start. Last Round is supposed to be the definitive edition of the 2019 release, featuring a photo mode and numerous DLC outfits and costumes, amounting to 440 DLC items.

Paywalls, expensive DLC and no upgrade path

Many fans of the original game have bombarded Last Round with negative reviews on Steam, where it reportedly sits at 78% negative. Major complaints include the re-release model, which some players argue could have been handled as an update, and the sheer amount of DLC. According to IsThereAnyDeal, the game’s roughly 440 DLC items add up to about $1,707.60, not including the base game.

Otherwise, Last Round appears largely identical to the original Dead or Alive 6 in terms of core gameplay and performance. Notably, it still does not include rollback netcode, and cross-platform play remains unavailable.

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round is expected to receive updates and additional DLC after launch, but there are several caveats. The original 2019 version has been delisted from storefronts, meaning new players must buy the newer edition to access the game. Existing Dead or Alive 6 owners also do not appear to have a broad path to a free or discounted upgrade to Last Round.

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round includes several previously released DLC characters, including Nyotengu, Phase 4, Momiji, Rachel, and Tamaki, along with new costumes, hundreds of cosmetic items, and season passes for paid DLC. However, returning guest characters such as Mai Shiranui and Kula Diamond are not included in the Last Round re-release, making their availability and transfer status a sticking point for returning players.

DLC characters that previously cost $4 now cost $8 each. As a result, many players see Dead or Alive 6: Last Round as a strong fighting game wrapped in a frustrating business model. While the core gameplay remains tight, the heavy monetization has overshadowed the re-release for many fans.

Dead or Alive 6: Last Round also offers an alternative free-to-play version called Core Fighters, but it limits players to only a small selection of characters. For players who want the full Last Round experience, the combination of a paid base game, separately sold characters, cosmetics, and other DLC can become a significant and potentially recurring investment.
