CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 will indeed be playable on the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, using the Smart Delivery system on the latter. At launch, the RPG will deliver enhanced visuals over the base console iterations, likely in the form of support for higher resolutions and frame rates.
However, neither console will have access to a true “next-gen” version of Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red will release a ninth-gen version of the game, built around the strengths of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, some time later. It will, however, still be free to owners of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
This is in stark contrast to Rockstar’s approach to Grand Theft Auto 5: this title saw full-priced releases on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and is set to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X without major changes.
While it is disappointing that a ninth-gen optimised version of Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be available at launch, it is heartening to see compatibility and updates guaranteed on both platforms.
