While the Redmi Y2/S2 is slated to receive the official MIUI 12 update later this year, those who are eager to try out the latest features can now do so thanks to a custom ROM released by the Xiaomi.eu team. This ROM features MIUI 12 based on Android 10 updated till the April 2020 security patch and while most users haven't reported any serious issues, the developer does note the presence of a couple of bugs.

While we have been consistently giving you updated information about the availability of the MIUI 12 update for eligible devices, the possibility of some of the devices getting the new bits still hangs in the air or will happen only at a later date assuming there are no show-stopping bugs. Budget devices such as the Redmi Y2/Redmi S2-powered by the popular Snapdragon 625 SoC have been pretty successful, so it is only natural that owners of these phones would continue to expect some love.

The Redmi Y2/S2 originally launched with Android 8 Oreo but did receive a feature update to the Android 9-based MIUI 11. While it is not exactly clear when the device would be receiving MIUI 12 (we do hear that Xiaomi has a rollout planned in a later phase), there is still a way to experience the update beforehand.

Taking advantage of the unlockable bootloader in Xiaomi devices, the folks behind the popular Xiaomi.eu custom ROM have developed a custom MIUI 12 ROM for the Redmi Y2/S2 with Android 10 as the base OS. The update version is designated as MIUI 12 20.4.30 beta with security patches dated April 2020.

Updating your Redmi Y2/S2 to the custom MIUI 12 beta ROM is fairly simple. All you need is an unlocked bootloader, a custom recovery tool, and the MIUI 12 port itself. After that, it is just a matter of booting into custom recovery, wiping the device, flashing the custom ROM, doing a final force-reboot. Detailed instructions can be found at the Source link below.

While the update works for the most part, the developer does note a couple of bugs that affect Night Light and Hotspot. While a fix for Night Light is not yet available, the Hotspot bug can be fixed by going to the Hotspot Settings -> Set up portable hotspot and setting Device Identification to Default.

If you own a Redmi Y2/S2 as a spare device and are comfortable with these minor glitches, you may want to look at flashing your phone with this custom ROM. That being said, do note that you will have to do a clean wipe again when Xiaomi eventually releases the official MIUI 12 stable bits.
