Community outraged by unfair decision at Pokémon tournament

On April 5, the final of the Pokémon GO Regional Championship in Orlando took place. Player Firestar73 had won the match on merit. However, his victory was later revoked because tournament officials classified his celebration as unsportsmanlike conduct. The title therefore went to his opponent, Nitetimeclasher. In the community, the decision has been met with outrage and disbelief.
What exactly happened: after his win, Firestar73 tore off his headset and celebrated toward the crowd. It was likely a spontaneous reaction after five nerve-racking matches, and many in the community have shown understanding for it. Officials, however, judged the celebration to be unsportsmanlike – even though the tournament winner immediately went over to his opponent afterward and shook his hand. A clip of the incident is currently circulating on X.
Looking at finals from other tournaments, a brief burst of celebration does not seem unusual. The winner of the 2019 Pokémon TCG World Championship final, for example, reacted in a very similar way. He threw his arms into the air and celebrated toward the crowd, but was not disqualified.
In the comment section under the video on X, the mood is almost entirely critical. Many users consider it excessive to strip a player of a finals victory over such a brief moment of celebration, especially since he showed sportsmanship immediately afterward by shaking his opponent’s hand. Fans are calling it an embarrassing decision that does more harm than good to both the tournament and the credibility of the competition. Many are demanding that the ruling be reversed or at least explained transparently.
