Meta upgrades Meta AI with Muse Spark

Meta has unveiled Muse Spark, a new in-house AI model that now powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai, with broader rollout plans for WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta’s AI glasses in the coming weeks. The company introduced the model on April 8, 2026, calling it the first release from Meta Superintelligence Labs and saying it is designed specifically for Meta’s own products.
Muse Spark is now live in Meta AI
In its announcement, Meta said Muse Spark is its “most powerful model yet.” Though the company also described it as a smaller, faster first step in a new model family rather than its final frontier system. Meta says the model already powers the upgraded Meta AI experience on the app and website, where users can switch between faster and more reasoning-heavy modes depending on the task.
Meta also says the upgraded assistant can launch multiple subagents in parallel to handle different parts of a request at once. In the company’s example, Meta AI can split up a family trip-planning prompt so that one agent drafts the itinerary, another compares destinations, and another looks for kid-friendly activities.
Meta is pushing harder on visual understanding and shopping features
A large part of Meta’s positioning for Muse Spark is a stronger multimodal perception. The company says the model is built to better understand photos and visual context, letting users do things like compare products, identify objects, or ask questions about what the camera sees. Meta says those perception features will become more useful once the upgraded system reaches its AI glasses.
Meta is also tying the upgrade more closely to its social ecosystem. According to the company, Meta AI will increasingly surface recommendations and shared content from Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, while new shopping features are meant to draw on creators, communities, and brand content already circulating across Meta’s apps.
US rollout starts now, with more platforms to follow
Meta says the upgraded Meta AI experience with Instant and Thinking modes is starting to roll out in the US on the Meta AI app and website first. The company says additional capabilities and wider availability will expand to more countries and to more Meta surfaces in the weeks ahead. Meta also says Muse Spark will be offered in private preview via API to selected partners, while future versions of the model may be open-sourced.
