Casio's new sapphire-cased MR-G to reportedly be the most expensive and rare G-Shock ever

Casio's MR-G line watches are considered to be the most premium ones in its lineup.
A Casio MR-G with a sapphire case, limited to 20 pieces worldwide and priced at 10 million yen (~$65,000), is reportedly in preparation for the line's 30th anniversary. If that figure is legit, it would be the most expensive G-Shock ever, ahead of 2019's gold square.

A Casio MR-G limited to 20 pieces worldwide and priced at 10 million yen is in preparation, according to Great G-Shock World. The outlet says multiple sources have described the same watch.

If the figure is true, it would be the most expensive G-Shock ever made, and by a wide margin too. The current record belongs to the G-D5000-9JR, the solid 18-karat gold square released in 2019 for the line's 35th anniversary at 7.7 million yen (across 35 pieces). Within MR-G the gap is even bigger. The MRG-B2000JS-1AJR, a sword-inspired Japan exclusive limited to 800, was the first MR-G to pass 1 million yen, and a standard MRG-B5000B-1JR is available for close to 495,000 yen.

The specification apparently driving the rumored price up is a sapphire case. We know G-Shock has used sapphire for crystals for years, but a case machined from it would be brand-new to the line. Plus sapphire is quite slow and wasteful to cut, which would make sense for a run of only 20.

Casio's own site now has an MR-G 30th Anniversary section marking three decades since the MRG-100 of 1996, and the report describes the watch as an anniversary model expected before the end of the year.

Everything else is unknown. No model number has surfaced and Casio has published nothing. The blog says plainly that the reference and appearance are unconfirmed and that its confidence is because of the same details reaching it from several followers rather than on documents or images. It suggests anyone considering a purchase keep an eye on the Edge concept stores.

10 million yen is roughly $65,000. The comparison with the gold square is better made in yen, since the currency has weakened sharply since 2019, when 7.7 million yen converted was nearly $70,000.
