Canon has long been the top camera brand by sales in the US, but the uninformed might be unaware of this, given just how uncommon online discourse and hype is around Canon cameras — especially compared to the likes of the Fujifilm X100 series and the venerable Sony RX100 VII (curr. $1,299.99 at Best Buy). In a presentation published alongside its annual revenue results today, Canon confirmed that it has recognised the popularity of compact cameras and has committed to increasing production of those cameras in the upcoming years.
As for Imaging, starting with cameras, we will work to increase sales of full-frame cameras, particularly the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, and expand sales of RF lenses. Additionally, we will expand sales by increasing production of compact cameras, which are gaining popularity mainly among young people, to achieve 8.2% sales growth for cameras overall. As for network cameras, by achieving sales growth of 14.5%, exceeding the market’s growth, we aim to achieve 10.6% growth for the entire Imaging Group and sales of more than 1 trillion yen.
Despite producing some of the most sought-after, powerful compact cameras in the PowerShot G7 and G9 line-up, Canon has seemingly slowed both production and release of these popular cameras, with the G7 X III being out of stock basically everywhere. In recent times, thanks to social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, the popularity of cameras like the Fujifilm X100V and similarly pocketable, yet powerful cameras, has grown significantly.
In its presentation, Canon specifically mentions increased demand for the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, further noting that it aims to increase camera sales by 8.4% “through increased production and supply.”
This news comes after a recent leak points to a new Canon APS-C camera that may be going after the likes of the Fujifilm X100VI and upcoming OM System OM-3 with a compact retro design and impressive video features.
