Earlier in March, we reported about the incoming arrival of a new Canon EOS RV and the international launch of the Canon PowerShot V1. While those leaks we mentioned were unconfirmed, Canon USA has now published a teaser for two new camera launches on March 26.
The teaser contains two silhouettes: One is almost certainly the PowerShot V1, based on its shape and features, but the other is shrouded in darkness — both in the official teaser and when it comes to available information. Canon's teaser includes a giant glowing V in the middle of the frame, which is almost certainly a hint that this new camera will be video-centric. The previous leaks of the EOS RV included a single blurry image of the upcoming camera, and the few features that are visible in Canon's darkened teaser match those seen in the leaked image perfectly.
Previous rumours of the EOS RV, and Canon's own naming scheme — based on the EOS RP — revealed that the new video camera would be a compact full-frame camera built to compete with cameras like the Sony ZV-1 (which retails for $2,198 on Amazon). Judging by both the previously leaked image of the EOS RV, the full-frame camera looks to only be slightly larger than the already compact PowerShot V1, which uses a significantly smaller 1.4-inch sensor.
It's also entirely possible that, given Canon doesn't follow its previous naming convention, and the EOS RV isn't actually a derivative of the EOS RP, the EOS RV will pack an APS-C sensor instead of a full-frame sensor. The previous leak about the EOS RV also included a tip about a potential EOS R50 V, whose name suggests that it will feature an APS-C sensor instead, which would mean the RV will likely be a full-frame variant.
How the EOS RV will stack up is obviously still unknown, but the Sony ZV-E1 is still an impressive camera, given it packs everything from a full-frame sensor to in-body image stabilisation into a body not much bigger than the Sony ZV-E10 II (curr. $998 on Amazon), which is an APS-C camera body.
