Canon's recent PowerShot V1 announcement was a mixed bag, with videographers, social media users, and casual photographers largely enjoying its compact size, power-user features, and wide angle lens, there are issues with the ergonomics and controls — not to mention the lack of an EVF — that are deal-breakers for hardcore photography enthusiasts. According to recent leaks out of Canon Rumors, though, there is a new Canon PowerShot G-series camera coming to remedy those issues.
Canon Rumors has not specified what improvements will be included in the updated PowerShot G camera, but it stands to reason that it will use the same 22 MP, 1.4-inch sensor and internals as the Canon PowerShot V1, along with all the new AI and AF magic that comes with it. The photography focus also suggests a redesigned interface — perhaps with more physical buttons and dials — and the inclusion of an EVF. It also seems likely that Canon may forego the built-in ND filter and opt for a zoom lens with slightly more reach, similar to the 24–100 mm equivalent lens from the ever-popular PowerShot G7X III.
The new leaks are sparse on the details, but the launch of the new compact camera will supposedly happen before the end of 2025, suggesting that more information will surface in the coming months, as we have seen with previous Fujifilm and Canon leaks.
Given that the Canon PowerShot V1 currently retails for $979 on Amazon, it would be reasonable to expect the new Canon PowerShot G camera to come in at around the $1,000 mark, as well.
