Blizzard pricing policy: Controversy over overpriced cosmetics in Diablo 4 sparks heated debate in the community
Blizzard is not exactly known for having a particularly community-friendly pricing policy, as the latest example clearly demonstrates. The reason for the controversy is a paid cosmetics bundle that includes an exclusive mount (Vitreous Scourge), a matching horse armor and two trophies that can be attached to mounts. Also included are 7,000 platinum. The package is available for 64.99 US dollars or 60.55 euros in the Diablo 4 in-game store. As if this was not foreseeable, this pricing policy led to a massive storm of indignation among players, which mainly took place on platforms such as Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).
The focus of the criticism is the fact that the cosmetics bundle costs almost as much as the main game, which Blizzard is offering for 70 euros without a discount. On Battle.net all versions of Diabolo 4 are currently reduced by 40 percent, meaning that the cosmetic content is currently even more expensive than the main game in the Ultimate Edition.
Players fear increasing monetization
The community has long been critical of the disproportionate microtransactions in Diabolo 4, but the cosmetic content has never been as overpriced as it is now. A good example: the "Father's mount" package, which was offered at an insignificantly higher price of 65 euros. However, this bundle contained 7,800 platinum, which was considered a more acceptable value by some players. The fact that the current bundle contains less platinum and yet is offered at a similar price has heightened players' fears about the increasing monetization of the game.
In light of this heated debate, it remains to be seen whether Blizzard will respond to the community's feedback and possibly make changes to the pricing of cosmetic content in Diablo 4. Until then, the discussion about overpriced microtransactions will undoubtedly continue.
