Diablo IV will be free to play for four days starting today. You can play it via Battle.net on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Progress made in the trial period will carry over, should you decide to purchase the game later.

Blizzard has announced players can try out Diablo IV for free between today (September 19) and September 23. However, you can't grab a copy off steam and will have to play via Battle.net on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Characters created during the free trial will be limited to level 20, and the progress will get carried over should you decide to purchase a game.

You can also get up to a 40% discount on Diablo IV Standard Edition after your free trial expires. The promotion comes a few weeks before the game's DLC, Vessel of Hatred is slated to drop along with Patch 2.0 which completely rehauls the game, its leveling system and difficulty spikes. It also expands upon the game's campaign and introduces a new Spiritborn class, but only players who bought the DLC can play it.

It is clear Blizzard wants to drum up interest for Vessel of Hatred before it drops on October 8. However, level 20 is a pitifully low level as it doesn't even scratch the surface of Diablo IV's end-game, which is where you'll be spending a majority of your time. Even someone who is new to the genre can easily hit level 20 in two hours tops.
