Asus teases upcoming hardware that's not a Mothership 2 but could be a ROG tablet
Computex 2019 is just around the corner and tech companies are starting to tease their products to an expectant public. Asus has something gaming-related in an interesting video that has been tweeted on ROG Global. Obviously, there have been plenty playing the guessing game at what it is, although Asus has stated it’s not a Mothership.
Cryptically, when quizzed if it was a Mothership 2 device, the reply from Asus was “Not a mothership. More like an escape pod.” Naturally, this can be taken as meaning something smaller, so either a tablet or a gaming smartphone. However, if you watch the video carefully, the teased device certainly seems more likely to be a tablet than a phone.
Although others have opined at the mysterious ROG device being a TV or monitor, a tablet seems like the safest best. The display at the end of the teaser clip seems to show a bezel that would not look out of place on a tablet, and there is a group of hardware buttons that are visible on the side, which clearly includes a volume rocker and a power button.
An Asus ROG tablet would be a rather daring move from the Taiwanese gaming specialist. The death of the tablet market has frequently been reported (prematurely or not), so it would be a risky venture. But Asus wants players to “break away from your battlestation” and “see a new kind of gaming freedom”, so it looks like ROG could soon be going mobile in a slate form factor.
