Asus introduced the ROG Strix XG27UCS in early 2024, and the gaming monitor proved to be a solid choice for those seeking a 27-inch model with a 4K IPS panel. The monitor held its ground relatively well in Notebookcheck's tests, and the adaptive sync tech and picture quality of the panel were quite impressive.
There's now a refreshed variant of the same monitor, which Asus has quietly put up on its website. Called the ROG Strix XG27UCS Gen 2 or XG27UCSR, the most notable change is dual-mode support. This adds an FHD resolution mode, which offers a 324Hz refresh rate.
The 4K resolution mode remains the same, which allows the panel to operate with a 160Hz refresh rate. As for the other specs, they seem to be identical to the Gen 1 model of the gaming monitor. That includes the 27-inch display size, with Asus noting that the screen is a Fast IPS panel.
It has a 0.3 ms rated response rate, and the company says that the Smart Pixel technology ensures high clarity and sharpness, even in the FHD mode. There's ELMB, which, paired with variable refresh rate, promises to eliminate ghosting and tearing effects during gaming.
This new version of the ROG Strix XG27UCS also retains the USB-C port with DP Alt mode and PD, allowing users to make easy connections with laptops and gaming handhelds. The overall design remains the same as well, and the updated gaming monitor comes with an adjustable stand, but it seems to be missing the smartphone slot that was available on the stand that the Gen 1 came with. Asus has yet to share the price and availability details of the XG27UCSR, but it's worth noting that the last version retails for around $400.
