The Zephyrus G GA502DU wants to redefine what a budget gaming laptop should be. Its rare pairing of an AMD H-series CPU with an Nvidia GeForce Max-Q GPU is something we wish could have happened years ago. It offers a superbly balanced gaming experience at 1080p30 or 1080p60 in a chassis the size of a flashy flagship all at an affordable price.

However, the main reason you will buy the ROG Zephyrus G is for its slim and light chassis. Not only is it slim and light, but it also offers a premium styling that you will find in more expensive gaming laptops. Hence, at the coffee table, you will steal glances with the Zephyrus G for its svelte looks while you are hard at your gaming or editing sessions.

As of writing this review, the Core i7-powered Zephyrus M GU502 costs Rs 1,42,990. This Ryzen 7-powered Zephyrus G GA502, on the other hand, costs Rs 99,990. If you’re planning to get the cheaper alternative so you can save Rs 43,000, you’ll be happy to note that you won’t be losing out on too much kit. You’ll end up with a (slightly) less powerful CPU and GPU but it won’t make a vast difference to your gaming experience, especially if you’re a casual gamer. The same goes for the display quality.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G is another gaming machine that has been impacted by compromised design in some areas. The screen, for instance, has poor colours, and the keyboard is light and breezy. It’s fine for casual gaming and for esports, but not for serious players.

ASUS rarely makes missteps when they produce gaming notebooks, and their Zephyrus G GA502 thankfully isn’t one of them. Its stylish chassis blends well in most corporate settings (that giant ROG logo notwithstanding), and its thin and light chassis is great for people looking for a gaming notebook that literally won’t break their back.

Finding a gaming laptop in any budget isn't that hard. Picking the right one is. Between the plethora of features and a fair amount of marketing mumbo-jumbo, not to mention the multitude of CPU-GPU choices, it's nearly impossible for a layman to pick the right combo.

Asus has given us two choices at very different price points, but there's a lot that the ROG Zephyrus G GA502DU has in common with the Zephyrus M GU502GU. Of course the lower priced laptop lacks a few bells and whistles such as the RGB backlit keyboard and USB Type-C charging, but these are not things we would miss a lot. Even the 120Hz screen is not a huge step down from 144Hz.

The Zephyrus G GA502 is a competent multi-purpose laptop. It's compact and light and fast enough for daily chores and some gaming, lasts longer than the competition on a charge and is arguably the nicer looking and the nicer made option in its price-segment. However, you're going to sacrifice on the screen quality and performance compared to other laptops in its class, and you'd be lacking certain features that you might want, as you'll find out from our detailed review down-below.

Overall, the Zephyrus G is, by far, my favorite Zephyrus to date. Aside from its lightweight and slim form factor, it also delivers above-average gaming performance with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is suitable for First-Person Shooter games. Not only that, it has an impressive battery life for a gaming laptop. My only beef here is that there are times that it glitches out like when the screen completely turns all black for a moment then goes back to normal. I also would’ve preferred an SD card slot and RGB backlit-keyboard which should complete my whole gaming experience.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G GA502 has strong VR-ready graphics packed into a super-light design, but its CPU and display are lackluster.

Overall, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G GA502 has both exceeded and fallen short of my expectations. The main area of contention for me is that dull-looking display, and it may be hard to look past that if you are used to a vibrant monitor. Its other issues are more minor, however, and there is no denying the laptop offers a good level of 1080p gaming performance in a sleek and portable chassis. The excellent battery life also makes this a very realistic option if you want something to use at work or university.

So, about the problem we mentioned… It happened that the NVIDIA dedicated GPU and the integrated AMD GPU had some unsettle business between them. In the middle of a graphically-intensive test, there were a couple of moments where the integrated graphics card kicked in to “support” the dedicated one. This resulted in a framerate drop and stutters.

The Zephyrus G15 is a fairly competent all-round portable 15-inch laptop. It performs admirably in demanding loads and pairs the hardware with a compact build and a punchy and fast screen, a great option for daily use and gaming, and even a fine one for color-accurate work. However, the smudgy materials, the shallow keyboard, and the MaxQ-only GPU options, and especially the wonky thermal design and high internal temperatures, these all eat into its potential, both as a gaming ultraportable and as a multi-tasker.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502 (2020) isn’t a bad device but its questionable performance under heavy loads makes it a not-so-attractive choice for gaming because for the same amount of money you can buy some other laptop with better cooling and performance levels than this ASUS device.

Even the slowest mobile Ryzen 7 H-series Renoir CPU is able outperform most laptops running on the latest 10th gen Core i7 Comet Lake-H CPU. Though raw CPU performance is excellent, the $1300 asking for price of the Zephyrus G15 is a bit high considering the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q GPU.

As I mentioned earlier, this Zephyrus G15 GA502 is definitely a steal. It’s slightly thicker than an Ultrabook but you will be getting way more power with this device. Furthermore, it’s pretty difficult to find a gaming laptop that has the specs and quality like this one has for the 1300 dollars price range (price can change quickly). Especially the 240Hz screen and 1TB SSD storage. In closing, if you value portability, sleekness, and power in a gaming laptop, this laptop is the best choice for the price. It is so sleek yet has a lot of power right out of the gate. I value a very portable gaming laptop that is not bulky and gigantic that can make it unpleasant to carry it around. This ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502IV-PH96 can provide that ultimate portability, and a whole lot more.
