Asus Zenbook UX510UW-CN044T Notebook Review

All-rounder with gaming qualities. With the Zenbook UX510UW, Asus has created a successful compromise of a good gaming laptop and all-rounder for everyday use. The slim laptop pleases with a good configuration and good rates. However, the laptop has its shortcomings.

For the original German review, see here.

With the Zenbook UX510UW, Asus launches a stylish, 15.6-inch all-rounder that sports an interesting CPU-GPU combination: Asus fuses a GeForce GTX 960M GPU with a ULV dual-core processor. Among the GTX-960M laptops that we have tested, the Zenbook is the second device that is based on this combination. This graphics core is normally paired with a quad-core processor. Consequently, the Zenbook requires less energy than the competition, and it is also quieter overall. Rivals are laptops like Dell's XPS 15 2016 9550, HP's Omen 15, Acer's Aspire V15 Nitro, and Apple's MacBook Pro 15.

Case

Asus uses a silver-gray aluminum casing for its Zenbook. Only the display bezel (color: black), and hinges (silver-gray) are plastic. The laptop does not offer a maintenance hatch. The casing has to be opened for accessing the innards. More about that later. The battery is non-removable.

The casing proves to be well-manufactured and does not exhibit any weaknesses. This looks slightly different in terms of stiffness. The base unit can be warped a bit too much for our taste. Here, we expect more from a laptop that costs just below 1300 Euros (~$1419). The lid's stiffness is within an acceptable range. Pressure on the lid's back does not lead to image distortions. The hinges keep the lid firmly in position but it rocks for a moment. Opening the lid with one hand is possible with a bit of tugging.

The Zenbook's dimensions and weight place it in the upper midfield. The most compact and lightest device is Dell's XPS 15.

Connectivity

The Zenbook comes with a selection of interfaces that we find in many laptops. Two of the four Type-A USB ports support USB 3.0 standard. One Type-C USB port (USB 3.1 Gen1) is also present. It supports DisplayPort-over-Type-C USB. An adapter for using this feature is not included. Such an adapter can be purchased in electronics stores for about 20 Euros (~$21). The Zenbook doesn't come with an Ethernet port. When required, a corresponding adapter will also have to be used here. Good: The laptop's interfaces are distributed in the back areas of both sides. Thus, cables will not obstruct the places beside the wrist rest.

SD-Card Reader

The speed of the installed memory-card reader is inappropriate for the laptop's price level. The reader is very sluggish. A maximum transfer rate of 27 MB/s is achieved when copying large data blocks. Transmitting 250 JPG image files (approx. 5 MB each) is performed at a speed of 19.1 MB/s. We tested the memory-card reader with our Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II reference card.

Communication

In terms of Wi-Fi, Asus relies on a module that carries a chip by Intel (7265). In addition to the Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n standards, it also supports the fast ac-standard. The transmission rates we determined in ideal conditions (no other Wi-Fi devices in the vicinity, short distance between laptop and server PC) were good. The connection between the Zenbook and our router was always stable.

The webcam does not produce any breathtaking photos. The quality suffices demands placed on videoconferencing. Its maximum resolution is 1280x720 pixels.

Accessories

The Zenbook is shipped with the usual documents: a quick-start poster and warranty conditions. Beyond that, a USB mouse has found its way into the box.

Maintenance

Screws hide behind the rear rubber stoppers
Screws hide behind the rear rubber stoppers

The laptop's base unit has to be removed for accessing the hardware. This involves removing the visible screws (Torx 5) on the underside. Asus loves to hide additional screws, thus making opening the casing as user-unfriendly as possible. The Zenbook is no exception. The Phillips screws behind both rear rubber stoppers also have to be removed. There is always a risk of scratching the casing when removing the stoppers and this is unnecessary. When all screws have been released, the base tray can be pried off using a flat spatula or putty knife. The user can then access the SSD, HDD, both fans, battery, and Wi-Fi module.

Warranty

The laptop comes with a two-year warranty - including a pick-up service. An extension to three years costs approximately 70 Euros (~$76). Please see our Guarantees, Return Policies & Warranties FAQ for country-specific information.

Input Devices

Keyboard

The Zenbook is furnished with a backlit chiclet keyboard. The three-level backlight is controlled via two function keys. The entire keyboard features flat keys with sleek surfaces. The keys have a short drop and clear pressure point. In our opinion, they could have a crisper resistance. The keyboard yields slightly in the center when typing on it. This should not be the case in a laptop from this price level. In total, Asus delivers a keyboard that meets the needs for home use. Prolific writers should opt for another device.

Touchpad

The multitouch ClickPad in the Zenbook has a surface area of 10.5x7.3 cm. Thus, plenty of room is available for gesture control. The pad's sleek surface does not stop the fingers from gliding. The pad has a short drop and clear pressure point.

Pixel grid
Pixel grid

The matte, 15.6-inch screen in the Zenbook has a native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. Its brightness (316.3 cd/m²) and contrast (931:1) are good. Positive: The screen never displays PWM flickering.

According to Asus' website, the Zenbook is also available with an HD screen (1366x768 pixels) and a UHD screen (3840x2160 pixels). The correspondingly furnished models are, however, not yet on the market. Rivals of the Zenbook, such as Dell's XPS 15 and Acer's Aspire V15 Nitro, are also available with UHD or Full HD panels.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17924 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Processor

A Core i7-6500U (Skylake) dual-core processor by Intel powers the slim laptop. It is a ULV model with a TDP of 15 watts. The CPU clocks at a base speed of 2.5 GHz, which can be boosted to 3 GHz (both cores) or 3.1 GHz (one core) via Turbo. Turbo is utilized in both AC and battery modes.

A look at our comparison chart shows that most rivals of the Zenbook are equipped with more powerful quad-core processors. Thus, Asus' laptop clearly lags behind the competition primarily in terms of multithread performance. This computing performance plus is, however, first clearly noticed when using applications optimized for multi-core processors. The performance difference will not be evident in routine use. The quad-core processors in the rivals belong to a higher TDP category (45 watts). Consequently, the user will have to accept a higher temperature development, higher power consumption, and shorter battery runtimes. The latter is often compensated for by the use of bigger batteries. In return, the laptops' total weight is higher.

Storage Devices

An M.2 SSD by SanDisk serves as system storage. It has a total capacity of 256 GB. Roughly 200 GB of that can be used. The rest of the storage is reserved by the Windows installation and recovery partition. The SSD's transfer rates are good. Zenbook owners will not be lacking storage capacity. In addition to the SSD, a traditional 2.5-inch hard drive is inside the laptop (1 TB, 5400 RPM).

Graphics Card

Asus furnishes the Zenbook with a GeForce GTX 960M graphics unit by Nvidia. It is an entry-level model to the GPU premium range. The core supports DirectX 11 and clocks at a base speed of 1097 MHz, which can be boosted up to 1189 MHz via Turbo. The GPU is supported by 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory (128-bit interface). The 3DMark outcomes slightly lag behind the rivals based on the GTX 960M unit. Here, the rivals' quad-core processors become obvious.

Besides the GeForce GPU, Intel's HD Graphics 520 graphics chip is also inside the laptop. The units create a graphics-switching solution (Optimus). The GeForce GPU takes care of performance-driven applications like computer games. Intel's graphics chip is used for routine tasks and battery mode. Switching is performed automatically, but the user can always intervene manually.

Gaming Performance

The Zenbook reproduces almost all up-to-date games smoothly. The user will be on the safe side in terms of frame rates in games when selecting the HD resolution (1366x768 pixels) and medium quality settings. Games that do not have high hardware requirements allow for considerably more. It gets tight in Ashes of the Singularity and Mafia 3. The resolution/quality level has to be reduced further here. In total, the Zenbook's frame rates lag behind most rivals slightly. The weaker dual-core processor is noticed here. Laptops with a GeForce GTX 970M or GTX 980M graphics units will be needed for considerably more gaming power.

Energy Management

Power Consumption

We measured a maximum idle consumption of 11.8 watts - an acceptable rate. The energy requirement climbed to 95 watts in the stress test. This is a normal rate for the hardware platform installed here. The Zenbook consumes considerably less power than comparable laptops, such as Dell's XPS 15 based on a quad-core processor, over the entire load range. The ULV dual-core processor in Asus' laptop becomes evident here.

Battery Runtime

Asus' laptop achieved a runtime of 7:10 hours in our practical Wi-Fi test. This test simulates the load needed for opening websites. The "Balanced" profile is enabled, the energy-saving modes are disabled, and the screen's brightness is dimmed to approximately 150 cd/m². Our video test loops the short movie Big Buck Bunny (H.264 encoding, 1920x1080 pixels) to check the video playback time. The wireless modules are disabled, the energy-saving functions are turned off, and the screen's brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m². The Zenbook shut down after 7:02 hours here.

Verdict

In review: Asus Zenbook UX510UW-CN044T. Test model courtesy of Campuspoint.de
In review: Asus Zenbook UX510UW-CN044T. Test model courtesy of Campuspoint.de

The Zenbook comes with a Core i7 processor that has more than enough computing power for routine use. Asus waives a quad-core processor and installs a ULV dual-core processor instead. It has a positive effect on ergonomics and battery life. However, the Zenbook lags slightly behind the frame rates of other GTX 960M laptops in computer games. Nevertheless, almost all up-to-date games can be played on the Zenbook. The laptop runs quietly at least in idle mode and barely heats up even during load. A quick SSD ensures a fast-running system. The additionally installed 2.5-inch hard drive provides the necessary storage capacity. The Zenbook's matte IPS panel pleases with good brightness, good contrast, and stable viewing angles. The whole package is rounded off with decent battery runtimes.

With the Zenbook UX510UW, Asus has a successful all-rounder with gaming qualities that even allows mobile use thanks to a good battery life in its lineup.

However, the Zenbook is not free of criticism. The keyboard could have a crisper resistance and a clearer pressure point. The base unit should be stiffer. This can be expected in view of the laptop's price level. Beyond that, an Ethernet port is not present - an unusual decision.
