Sleek & affordable gaming? The Asus ROG Strix GL703VD is a 17.3-inch entry-level to mid-range gaming notebook which tries to find the right balance between style, performance and price. Unfortunately, Asus' new notebook runs too hot and is too noisy given the comparatively modest performance of its graphics card.

The Asus RoG Strix GL703VM is a high-quality laptop that packs great 1080p gaming performance into a respectably thin and light case. It’s not that portable, and isn’t designed to be, but is a good option for those who don’t want a machine that weighs 4kg and is 4cm thick.

The best ROG laptop from the GL-series? Probably yes but is it enough to be called the best in class? Well, again, it really depends on what are you looking for. The GL703VM offers some cool features rarely found in GTX 1060-powered notebooks including a 120 Hz G-Sync-enabled IPS panel, which is optional but still… It’s also pretty thin and light for 17-inch notebook so you get portability along with the excellent performance to some extent.

ASUS ROG’s Strix Scar laptop is aimed squarely at first person shooter gamers. It boasts GTX 1060 graphics, an i7-7700HQ processor and 16GB of DDR4 – but most impressive is the 120Hz Full-HD display and its 5ms response time. As with most ROG products, though, it does not come cheap – priced at £1599.99 here in the UK, the Scar is a pretty serious investment. Is it one worth making?

Hotter, Louder, Faster, Stronger. The Asus ROG Strix GL703VM is a more powerful version of the GL703VD, which we reviewed back in October. In addition to a faster GPU, the GL703VM brings a 120 Hz display, but fan noise and temperatures leave room for improvement.

The Asus Strix GL703 rounds the bases for a big-screened budget gaming laptop. Its colorful 1080p display, RGB-backlit keyboard, sleek design, and good overall quality make it fairly comfortable at its $1,149 price point. Our major complaint was its relatively noisy cooling system, which was compounded by the fact that the outside of this notebook became rather hot while gaming.

Caffeine boost. The Asus GL703GE packs in more processor performance than ever thanks to Intel’s new Core i7-8750H CPU. The Coffee Lake chip is a shot in the arm for processor-reliant tasks, and the 120 Hz display has been improved. Still, the price makes the GL703GE hard to recommend.

Cooler, faster, better. The mid-2018 edition of the Strix GL703 Scar Edition comes with hexa-core Coffee Lake-H i7 processor, same Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics and a significantly redesigned cooling system. The changes are largely positive.

Asus Rog Strix Scar Edition GL703GM-E5016
The Asus Rog Strix Scar Edition GL703GM-E5016 is a gaming laptop with advanced hardware. It includes a powerful Intel Core i7 six-core microprocessor and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 graphics processor. The chassis is divided in two by an oblique line that has, on its right, the logo of the ROG series backlit in red, while in the lower part of the housing there is the phrase "Republic of Gamers" engraved. All the surfaces of this model are made of plastic and show some weakness in localized pressure. Although it yields slightly to the localized pressure, it adequately protects the screen in it. Its firm hinge system allows users to open the laptop with one hand, keeping the screen in the selected position in any situation, although the opening angle is not too wide (135 º). Featuring a powerful Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor at 2.2 GHz, this model will allow users to perform all kinds of advanced functions (photo retouching, video editing, CAD design, etc.) at most demanding levels. Thanks to Turbo Boost technology, this microprocessor can increase its speed to a maximum of 4.1 GHz. It has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM at 2.666 MHz, an M.2 SSD of 256 GB compatible with NVME and a hard drive of 1 TB at 5,400 RPM. With 6 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM, the powerful Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 allows enjoying virtually any current game with high details and Full HD resolution, and even 4k in undemanding titles. Its keyboard features an RGB backlight configurable in 4 differentiated zones and 4 independent buttons to raise, lower and mute volume, as well as access the ROG Gaming Center application. With a refresh rate of 144 Hz, its 17.3 "Full-HD (1920x1080) IPS panel with LED backlighting is most likely the main attraction of this model, because it provides a more fluid reproduction than screens of 120 Hz. It is normally used by models for more advanced games from other manufacturers. The very short response time translates into a great advantage in games. Although its matt finish allows the use of the screen outdoors, its level of brightness limits this possibility to areas of shade or cloudy days. It has great networking capabilities being compatible with Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi AC, and Bluetooth version 4.1. In addition to a Kensington lock, there is two USB 3.1 (Gen1) type A ports , one USB 3.1 (Gen2) type C port and the SD / MMC card reader on the right side, while on the left there are two additional USB 3.1 (Gen1) type A ports, HDMI 2.0 and mini DisplayPort outputs, the power connector, the RJ45 (Ethernet,) port, and the combined headphone and microphone port. For a little over £2000, the ASUS ROG GL703G clearly represents quite a significant outlay. One which may deter people who are looking for the best they can get for the price they can afford. There is, however, a major factor which one has to consider with this specific laptop. Put simply, you are getting a lot for your money.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 960M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile: Mainstream graphics card based on Nvidia's Pascal architecture and successor to the GeForce GTX 965M. Is manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung and the technical specifications are very similar to the desktop version.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.
