Reviews for the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 GU604VY-NM042X
The new Asus M16 is available in three variants: With an RTX 4070, RTX 4080 or RTX 4090. We review the highest-end configuration. On top of that, its bright, 16:10, HDR, Mini-LED-backlit display is also new. We take a look to see if the $4,000 ROG M16 is just as impressive in real life as it is on paper.

As a multi-purpose laptop that's fairly portable and lightweight on one side, but at the same time capable of dealing with any of the most demanding workloads and games available today, the ROG Zephyrus M16 GU604VY is hardly matched by any other laptop out there. That's especially the case for this i9 + RTX 4090 + miniLED display variant reviewed here, but this unusual mix of features comes with a hefty, hefty price tag.

For gamers, there are some things that matter more than anything else. A high-refresh-rate display with accurate colours, a top-end processor, a flaunt-worthy design, the ability to customise almost every aspect of the software, as well as select hardware, and cool RGB lighting. The ROG Zephyrus M16 ticks all the right boxes here. It has a sharp display that can stun you sometimes. Its processor can be really fast, while the graphics card is adept enough to support ray tracing. Its speakers are the best I have heard on a gaming laptop by far. It is a good laptop for anyone who wants a portable gaming machine with an excellent display, an excellent audio system, and a fast chipset. But, at the same time, it is also true that you could get a high-end desktop with better specifications at this price. That and the fact that the battery life is below average could be the downsides.

It’s one thing to marry feature-packed functionality with high performance, and another to perfect the design craft. For the ROG Zephyrus series, the secret has always been rooted in balancing all three factors, where aesthetics, form, and function work together to offer an all-rounded experience. Not all gaming laptops with a powerful configuration have to be large and inconvenient to transport. The ROG Zephyrus M16 tries to strike a balance between portability and performance. What's more, with a body only slightly thicker than the MacBook Pro 16 and more powerful components than most consumer desktops, it does it well. At the same time, it will offer good components, quality assembly and a surprisingly original design element — AniMe Matrix. It is not a fact that it is worth paying extra for the latter. But with everything else, there are practically no questions, the ROG Zephyrus M16 is one of the most interesting gaming laptops.

Going back to the question of gaming laptops vs high-end gaming PCs, it all boils down to preference. If you’re someone who is always on the go, or you don’t have space in your room for a tower case, then you can’t go wrong with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16. It’s one of the most powerful laptops you can get out of the box today, and it can run most games at the highest settings. At the same time, video editors, graphic designers, and even those in 3D rendering can maximize this laptop to its full extent. It also comes with 2TB of storage already, but if you need more, you can always buy an external SSD. There is one thing you have to consider though – the price. This particular model GU604VY-NM042WS retails for PHP 339,995, and also includes an ROG backpack, ROG Fusion II 300 Headset, ROG Gladius 3, Type-C PD Adapter, and is pre-installed with Office Home & Student 2021. Yes, it’s a lot of money, but you are getting one fitted with the latest hardware available. That said, if you don’t need the NVIDIA RTX 4090, there are other variants available with only 32GB DDR5 RAM and paired with an NVIDIA RTX 4070 or 4080 for under PHP 250,000. But if you do have the space for a PC rig, and don’t need to game wherever you go, I would still recommend building a PC instead. At least that way, you have more flexibility in what parts to use and how to budget your rig.

When all is said and done, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 2023 is a laptop that has me standing on the fence. On one side, it is one of the most powerful Intel-based laptops ASUS has to offer, as well as being one of a handful of models that has the privilege of being able to house NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 discrete GPU. I would even go so far as to label it a 16-inch desktop replacement, crammed inside a 15-inch chassis. On the other side of the fence, the 13th Gen Intel CPU shows clear signs that the chipmaker has yet to solve its thermal throttling issues, and in addition to that, it still isn’t as energy efficient as the chipmaker had promised, which leaves the M16 2023 looking less of an alternative for the person that prioritises longevity, even for the casual gamer. For that matter, it’s also not cheap: the model I have in my hands retails for RM17999, while the base model of this laptop goes for RM10999. On another note, it’s not light either, weighing in at 2.3kg. To condense this story into a couple of sentences – Would I recommend that you purchase the M16 2023 to someone looking for a portable powerhouse machine? Yes, I would. Would I recommend it as a machine that balances power and longevity? Not quite and I’d recommend you look elsewhere.

That’s the only part of the Zephyrus M16 that’s a letdown but the rest of the package is highly impressive and the most important part – gaming performance – is staggeringly good thanks to the advances inherent in the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU and its DLSS 3 upscaling technology. Having said that, the top-end model I tested is insanely expensive for a laptop, no matter how good, so unless you absolutely must have the latest and greatest in graphics and display technology, I’d opt for the lesser GeForce RTX 4080 model and forgo the mini-LED display. In fact, I’d probably hold off until the RTX 4070 model lands in the UK because, I suspect, that may offer all the gaming capabilities the vast majority of people want but at a much lower price.

First, I tested the general weight and portability of the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) by carrying it around in a laptop bag. After I set it up, I ran several benchmarks to thoroughly test out how much the graphics card affected gaming performance. Finally, I used a variety of programs and applications to test out both battery life and general performance during work-like conditions, as well as gaming benchmarks to test the RTX 4090 GPU. The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 is a desktop replacement for gaming, meaning it's meant to be used for hardcore gaming sessions. I made sure to thoroughly test out this laptop in that regard, to make sure it reached certain levels of performance. I've tested plenty of gaming PCs and laptops, making me more than qualified to understand benchmark test results and how to properly stress test machines to see how well they perform as a work machine.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) is the most powerful gaming laptop that I have tested so far. From the overall design to the hardware specifications, the laptop offers everything that one expects from high-end premium gaming laptops of 2023. While it does get loud with continuous gaming, I did not notice any performance throttling even after over two hours of continuous gaming. If you are looking for a 16-inch gaming laptop that looks cool, handles any AAA title, and is also easy to carry around, then the ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) is the right choice. However, do note that this laptop definitely comes at a cost and it is for those, who want nothing but the best.

Driven by the huge performance gains from Intel and NVIDIA, the ROG Zephyrus M16 (GU604, 2023) presents a big leap forward from its predecessor. It crushes through every game there is in 1080p, and in its native 1600p resolution. One of the big things that help it achieve this is the MUX switch. This lets the NVIDIA GPU (in this case the RTX 4090) communicate directly with the fantastic display. Speaking of which, ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 (GU604, 2023)’s 16:10 screen has a mini LED backlight, WQXGA resolution, and high maximum brightness. It has wide viewing angles, a good contrast ratio, and super fast pixel response time. This bodes really well with the 240Hz refresh rate and the G-Sync support, resulting in a super smooth image. Furthermore, it covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and offers good color accuracy on top of that. Unfortunately, stuff is a bit weird with PWM. If you are in for the future, you will be happy to hear that the laptop has two SODIMM slots that fit DDR5 memory, working at 4800MHz. Storage-wise, you get two M.2 PCIe x4 slots.

Immensely powerful, slick and stylish, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 comes with the latest, greatest Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, a powerful processor, a flashy LED display on the lid and a hefty price tag, but that last one is to be expected. If you can afford it, this will serve as both a gaming and creative powerhouse (just as long as you don't stray too far from an outlet).

All told, while it doesn't look much different from last year's system and its battery life is far from ideal, there's a lot to like about the Zephryus M16 too. It's got a slick and surprisingly understated design with a bit of hidden flash, and its new 240Hz Mini LED display looks awesome. It also has plenty of ports and, in a very welcome upgrade to general quality of life, ASUS even increased the resolution of its webcam to full HD. With the system supporting a 13th-gen Core i9 chip and up to RTX 4090 GPUs, practically anything you do runs super smooth. I just wish ASUS hadn't stopped short of including the most beastly versions of Intel and NVIDIA's top-specced mobile silicon. When you're already paying $3,500 for a fully loaded model, you might as well toss a couple hundred more to ensure there aren't any compromises on performance. That said, for my money, I'd rather go with one of the M16's more affordable configs, which starts at $1,950 for an i9 chip and an RTX 4070 card. You still get that brilliant Mini LED screen and AniMe Matrix lid along with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. This way you'll have a system that won't bust your budget or make your back sore if you decide to carry it around, without putting a damper on your ability to game in style either.

The RTX 4090 sours the Zephyrus M16, but the good news is that you can get it with other GPUs. I haven’t tested the RTX 4080 configuration, but given the size and processor, I’m suspecting that’s the winning configuration. Outside of the GPU, there’s very little to complain about. The keyboard and chassis design are excellent, the screen beats even flagship gaming monitors, and the thermals and noise seem impossible given how much power the Zephyrus M16 has packed inside. There are definitely machines such as the MSI GT77 Titan and Lenovo Legion Pro 7i that deliver better performance with the same hardware, but there’s not another machine that matches the balance of portability and power offered by Asus’ latest flagship.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) delivers incredible speed thanks to Nvidia’s latest graphics core. And elsewhere you get a robust, light chassis and one of the best gaming laptop displays ever – but forthcoming rigs will be faster, and in several areas the M16 is too ordinary.

The 2023 version of the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 makes most of its big changes on the inside, and it gets plenty of things right in that regard. The screen is incredible: a high-resolution, nuanced and detailed Mini LED display that trounces virtually any other portable panel. Games look fantastic, and the RTX 4090 runs them smoothly, too – even if this relatively slim notebook can't match the beefiest models when it comes to Nvidia's latest GPU. The Core i9-13900H is a reliably fast CPU, the Zephyrus M16 is a decent thermal performer unless you head over to Turbo mode, and the Asus is slimmer and lighter than almost anything else with this spec. It also maintains great build quality despite its size. And assuming the price remains in the $3,499 range it'll probably arrive as one of the most affordable RTX 4090 notebooks. You'll certainly get better performance from the RTX 4090 in pricier, larger laptops, but those are probably targeting a different type of gamer's needs anyway. The AniMe Matrix lid is a cool gimmick that adds weight and little else, and the keyboard is good – but lots of other notebooks are much better. The battery doesn't last very long and it's unnecessarily hard to get inside the M16. As new gaming laptops launch for 2023, the Zephyrus M16 will almost certainly retain its crown as the slimmest, lightest RTX 4090 machine, and that Mini LED display will undoubtedly remain one of the best laptop displays around. And yet we would still hold off a purchase until other RTX 4090 laptops arrive unless this is exactly what you were looking for on a new gaming machine.

The ROG Zephyrus M16 impresses in key areas, with the RTX 4090 offering fantastic gaming pace and the Core i9 processor demolishing desktop tasks. That Mini LED screen is also the best display you’ll find any gaming laptop now. If you want a slim and smart-looking machine right now, you probably won’t do better. Performance compromises have been made in order to keep the M16’s size and weight in check, though. Rivals (including Asus’ own no-compromise Strix models) will soon offer GPUs and CPUs with even more power, and they’ll have better connectivity too. They’ll be more expensive, of course – and bulkier. But when you’re already spending this kind of cash, you’re going to want the most grunt going. Buy one if you’d like a portable powerhouse, and don’t mind the gimmicky AniMe Matrix LEDS – but keep in mind 2023 still has plenty more to offer.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 is our first real glimpse of RTX 40-series and 13th Gen Intel power, and I am absolutely floored by the performance gains. The improvements in compute and graphical performance are unlike anything you normally see in an annual update. Plus, these are all crammed into a seriously slick laptop frame that’s a joy to use on-the-go, alongside some small updates to make it even better. Let’s get the obvious out of the way — that price is going to sting, and this beast does get hot and loud fast. But if you want the bleeding edge of gaming potential, that has the ability to do some incredible things, this is a top choice.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
