With the ROG Strix GL504, Asus introduces a 15-inch high-end notebook that brings almost all the features you could wish for in a gaming platform. A 144-Hz panel? Check. Thin display bezel? Check. RGB keyboard? Check. Hexa-core CPU and DirectX-12 GPU? Check. We explain in our test why this is still not quite sufficient for a "very good" evaluation.

Otherwise, you’re probably better off considering one of the Max-Q laptops on the market, but be prepared to pay even more. ASUS too has a great alternative for those can spend more and that's with their Zepherus M.

One final aspect to add is that the new Strix lines have a higher price than the older models, with the Hero II GL504GM model starting at $1699, while the SCAR is supposed to start at $1999, but I’d reckon that’s the for GTX 1070 models. We’ll know more about these in the near future and we’ll update the article with further details. In the meantime, check out the quick review below.

Considering that this is a gaming laptop, we will begin with its performance. ASUS ROG GL504 impresses with extremely high computing performance, which comes at a price – 95°C when loaded to the max which is not a very good sign in the long term. As for the GPU temp of 88 degrees in extended gaming – it is not impressive either, but it seems that ASUS has prioritized performance over temperatures.

There's very little not to like about this 15-inch Asus ROG Strix GL504GM. The build, the keyboard/touchpad, the display, the speakers, the hardware and especially the way this device performs in everyday use and with games are among the best you can find in a mid-range full-size laptop. The ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR II GL504 is the result of ASUS listening to user feedback. The first-gen GL503 wasn’t a bad laptop at all. In fact, it was a nice change to see a manufacturer add more value to an existing lineup by specialising laptops based on the genre of games that the consumers tend to play. With practically everyone in the market providing the exact same hardware, there arises a need to add more value and with such SKUs that are built for a genre, ASUS is filling that void. The camera being a non-important element for gaming, has been a significant compromise.

ASUS’ ROG Strix Scar II has become the weapon of choice for us for the three weeks we’ve had it, and suffice to say we’re pretty impressed. The excellent screen with skinny bezels, the solid hardware, top-notch sound and fantastic keyboard make it a great choice for people looking for a powerful notebook to game on. Sure, the Php 104,995 price tag is a little steep, but if you’re already spending a princely sum on a gaming notebook, why not get one of the best options out there?

Asus Strix GL504GW-DS74
The Asus Strix GL504 is considered one of the fastest gaming laptops. At its core, the Asus Strix has been designed for FPS (First Person Shooting) gamers, but the promise of being able to play some of the most demanding titles on ultra settings with frame rates that hold up to the test. In the attempt to deliver on their promise, Asus has loaded up the laptop with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 core processor, 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 graphics card with 8 GB of DDR6 RAM. The laptop features a 15.6-inch IPS display with Full-HD resolution (1080p) and high 144 Hertz refresh rate display. The bezel surrounding the screen is almost unnoticeable on the top and sides, when compared to its predecessor, the ROG Strix SCAR, Asus has made a massive improvement. At the bottom of the screen, the Strix GL504 has a reflective Republic of Gamers logo and a 720p webcam on the lower right-hand side. For consumers to meet their gaming and potential streaming needs, there's no shortage of ports either. On the left-hand side, consumers will be able to find space for their power cable, as well as Ethernet port, a DisplayPort, HDMI, two USB 3.0 ports, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and USB-C. And on the right-hand side, the Asus Strix GL504 has an SD card reader, a USB 3.0 port and a Kensington lock slot. Looking at the design, the fully contrasted brushed gunmetal gray hood has a RGB logo in the front, and in addition, the laptop has a front-facing RGB light panel. At the base of the laptop, the most noticeable feature is the four-zone backlit RGB keyboard. Now, surrounding the keyboard is a carbon-fiber star look, where half the base is diagonally spread with the greyscale inspired camouflage design. In addition to the camouflage carbon-fiber design, the laptop has a smudge proof surface. The transparent WASD keys are exclusive to the SCAR models, which cater to FPS gamers. The buttons on the keyboard have a tactile and punchy feel to it, with 1.8 mm key travel. This translates to usage that feels responsive and intuitive. Also, consumers can find additional numpad and as well as navigation keys further on the right-hand side of the keyboard. Now, there are four quick select keys at the top of the keyboard, two volume control buttons, a mute microphone button and the ROG Gaming Center hotkey. Under the base of the keyboard, the Asus Strix Gl504 has the trackpad, which comes in at a fairly large size. It is Microsoft precision certified, meaning that the trackpad responses to gestures like two fingers scrolling and three fingers tab switching. The RoG Gaming Center provides all of the required system information, including CPU, GPU, RAM, and HDD usage. Consumers are also able to check on their respective temperature and memory of both the CPU and GPU at a glance. With ROG Oracle, consumers are able to toy with the color schematics and see them change instantly. There are over seven effect presets to select from and three tempo paces (slow, medium, and fast) for the keyboard illumination and the LEDs on the front and top of the laptop. As for the speakers, consumers are able to adjust extensively by the sonic studio and sonic radar. The Asus Strix Gl504 Intel 802 AC multi-antenna Gigabit Wi-FI allows consumers to connect at an impressive range. The WIFI delivers speeds of up to 1.7 gigabits per second. However, the battery life for the laptop can be rather short, with up to about 3 hours unplugged, while on minimal settings. The Asus Strix GL504 is suitable for gaming, working and streaming. The Core i7 processor combined with the GTX 2070 GPU delivers a powerful performance, which spreads across into every task that consumers try to push the laptop to undertake. On the surface, the Asus ROG Strix Scar II (GL504GV) is very similar to the Dell G7 15 7590, which we recently tested. Asus's new laptop shares a lot in terms of specifications, but adds RGB lighting and has a higher price tag. For that extra bit of money, you do get a faster SSD, a better mechanical drive, and an overclocked GPU. The laptop also generally runs a lot cooler and quieter, which is something we really liked. The RGB lighting is cool but if you're not a fan, you can turn it off.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 2 with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 is the same as its non-RTX counterpart in every way, save for the GPU. Even with this small change, it offers noticeable improvements in GPU-centric tasks like gaming, photo editing and video editing. You still get a great keyboard which works for typing long documents as well as it does for gaming. The display is great for all round use and the narrow bezels make it more immersive. The only real downside to the machine (besides the fact that it could be more powerful) is that its heavy and not exactly a "portable" laptop.

The Asus GL504 checks all the right boxes that are required for a good gaming laptop. The performance is similar to what you expect from a laptop of this calibre. On top of that, the design and build scores high with gamers, except for the wild RGB lighting on the keyboard. The battery life is also fairly good for a gaming laptop and you won't require to plug in external speakers to get optimum audio performance in games. If these are all that matters to you in a gaming laptop, the GL504 makes a good case for itself at Rs 1,64,990.

Value discussion aside, Asus has designed the Strix Scar II to be accessible and deliver a decent 1080p gaming experience. You won't find much to set it apart from other generally good gaming laptops at this price point, but it's a good all-round package nonetheless.
