In the latest firmware update, Aqara's FP2 presence sensor has added a sleep tracking mode that tracks cardiovascular data while you sleep. AI-powered person detection and People Counting are "on the horizon", as Aqara continues to fine-tune its mmWave presence sensor.

Aqara is bringing new functionality to its award-winning FP2 presence sensor. The mmWave radar device will now be capable of tracking sleep status as well as breathing and heart rate thanks to a recent firmware update. The new feature is already rolling out globally, while AI person detection capabilities remain "on the horizon".

The FP2 presence sensor is a disk-shaped wired gadget that runs on millimeter-wave radar tech, which means it should be able to detect your presence even if you're sitting still. In this way, Aqara's gadget significantly differs from sensors that rely on traditional motion detection which is prone to false negatives, albeit more affordable

The caveat here is that the FP2 has to be tethered constantly to a power source, which might be  a problem whenever you have to switch between the different modes available.

Following the latest firmware update (V1.2.3_0002.0059), the sensor dashboard will now show three modes instead of two: Sleep Monitoring mode in addition to the pre-existing Fall Detection and Zone Detection modes. To activate sleep tracking, users will have to place the sensor about 1m above their beds, tilted 45° towards the chest.

However, the three modes won't work simultaneously, so FP2 users will either have to readjust the sensor everytime they want to change modes, or buy more than one sensor. Thankfully, Aqara is offering the FP2 for 25% off on Amazon. At only $62.24, it's a good deal on what is now a sleep tracker, a fall detector and a presence sensor all in one – just not at the same time.

The expected AI-powered features should make the FP2 more intelligent at detecting people, so pets and other moving objects don't trigger any preset routines.

For instance, the FP2 currently works with its Smart Hub M2 to turn on or off the AC in a room if someone enters or leaves. Automated features like this could benefit tremendously from AI person detection and person counting, making the smart home truly smart. If it works as expected, all that'd be left is for the FP2 to provide Matter support, whenever it's ready.
