Apple has published a new support document explaining Background Security Improvements, a system designed to deliver smaller security fixes to iPhone, iPad, and Mac users between regular operating system updates. Apple says the feature is supported starting with iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1.

According to Apple, the system covers components such as Safari, the WebKit framework stack, and other system libraries that can be updated without waiting for a full OS release. Apple says it will publish these Background Security Improvements by date and include patched components and CVE details where applicable.

How it works

Apple revealed that Background Security Improvements are additional protections delivered between software updates. On supported devices, the option appears under Privacy & Security, where users can allow the fixes to install automatically. If the setting is turned off, those changes will instead arrive with a later software update.

In its Apple Platform Security guide, Apple stated that content eligible for this system has been moved into cryptexes, which it describes as cryptographically sealed disk images stored on the preboot volume. Apple says these can be updated with binary patches, allowing some security content to be delivered without the heavier process used for a full operating system update.

On macOS, Apple says Safari-related fixes delivered this way can become active once Safari is relaunched, without waiting for a full system restart. Apple also says these updates require less battery charge than a full software update.

Rollback and device management

Apple states that Background Security Improvements can also be removed if one causes a critical regression or compatibility problem, returning the device to the baseline state of the installed software version. The company adds that, in rare cases, it may temporarily remove the latest Background Security Improvement from devices through the Automatic Software Update mechanism.

For managed devices, Apple says mobile device management services can control automatic installation behavior and report installed Background Security Improvement versions.
