Digital cameras such as the Fujifilm X100 VI or the Leica M11 have long had useful smartphone apps. Pellica now complements analog cameras with a corresponding app, allowing analog photos to be supplemented with digital metadata, while the app is also intended to help with film development.

French photographer Imad Djebarni has developed a brand new app for the Apple iPhone ($777 on Amazon), which aims to make life easier for analog photographers. Instead of having to use several apps, Pellica is marketed as an all-in-one companion app for analog cameras.

The app makes it possible to manage several rolls of film at the same time. On the one hand, the app acts as an exposure meter when taking photos, making it easier to select the correct shutter speed and aperture when using an older camera without an integrated light meter. On the other hand, the app also allows you to add metadata, including the date and time as well as information on the current weather and GPS coordinates. A description can be added if desired.

Once a roll has been completed, the app can either show nearby film labs or display information to help with developing the film at home, with data on 48 different types of film currently available. Once the film has been developed, it can be scanned directly in the app using the smartphone camera, with the collected metadata then being automatically added to the scans. Another useful feature is that the app allows you to keep track of equipment and purchased film, including price, so you can keep an eye on your expenses.

Pricing and availability

Pellica is now available for the Apple iPhone in the App Store with an Android version to follow shortly. The free version allows you to manage three active rolls of film, and access to the light meter, the Lab app for developing film and the cost tracker are also free and ad-free. If you want to use all the features, you will either have to pay $2.99 per month or a one-off fee of $59.99.
