I'm Back Roll transforms film cameras like Leica M6 and Nikon F4 into digital cameras
The photographer Samuel Mello Medeiros has created I'm Back Film as a digital sensor for analog cameras back in 2023. I'm Back Roll now improves both the design and the image quality, as the heart of the new model is a 26.1 megapixel Sony IMX571 sensor in APS-C format, which is intended to enable a large dynamic range and low image noise at high ISO. The sensor is the same size as the sensor in cameras such as the Fujifilm X-E5 ($1,899 on Amazon).
The modernized design also makes it possible to use I'm Roll Back with Leica M rangefinder cameras by replacing the flap on the back - this only requires a few simple steps, as the video embedded below shows. I'm Back Roll is also said to be compatible with numerous analog cameras from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, Contax and Yashica, provided there is 4 millimeters of space between the shutter and the camera body after removing the film pressure plate.
The electronics, including battery and at least 64 GB of flash memory, are housed in a casing that is exactly the same size as a roll of film. As the sensor has no way of communicating with the camera's shutter, the manufacturer supplies a remote control that can be attached to the back of a camera. I'm Back Roll must be activated via this remote control before the camera's shutter release button is pressed. Photos and 4K videos can be transferred wirelessly via Wi-Fi or via a USB cable to a smartphone and charged via USB-C.
Prices and availability
I'm Back Roll APS-C is currently being funded on Kickstarter. A kit with I'm Back Roll including 64 GB memory, a remote control and a USB-C cable costs CHF 399 ($499) plus shipping and customs duties as part of the crowdfunding campaign. The manufacturer delivers worldwide, but delivery is expected to start in August 2027. Even though Samuel Mello Medeiros has already successfully implemented several Kickstarter projects, there is always a risk with crowdfunding that a product will be delivered late or with quality defects.
