While the competition is releasing spec'd-out mini tablets with OLED displays, Apple may have decided to play it basic with the iPad mini 8. The next slate in Apple's compact tablet series is expected to be released later in 2026.

Apple's long-rumored iPad mini version with OLED display is rumored for release later in 2026, but the latest leak suggests the screen upgrade won't come with all the bells and whistles that fans of compact tablets may have been hoping for.

According to a credible tipster hailing from the land of Apple OLED display suppliers, the 8.4-inch iPad mini 8 screen will use a hybrid OLED panel with the cheaper low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) technology. Unfortunately, it will indeed be running at the most basic fixed refresh rate of 60 Hz, and that is not going to be an upgrade from the current iPad mini 7 generation that is already discounted on Amazon.

LTPS OLED panels are typically locked to a single refresh rate and tend to run dimmer than their LTPO counterparts, so the iPad Mini 8's move to OLED would simply bring better contrast with deeper blacks without the smoothness that rival tablets in this price range have been enjoying for years.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S series and several Android slates have offered much higher refresh rates for multiple generations now. The Oppo Pad Mini, for instance, outclasses the iPad mini in almost every aspect, including the 144 Hz display. An expected A19 Pro chipset in the iPad mini 8 may remedy that somewhat, but if the display rumors pan out, Apple's continued reliance on 60 Hz may look increasingly out of step, especially on a device that debuts an OLED screen for the first time.

Granted, Apple's expensive iPad Pro line does offer displays with tandem LTPO OLED technology and dynamic refresh rates set between 10 and 120 Hz through its ProMotion technology, but the lowly iPad mini can’t realistically be expected to match those specs.

Apple did set a precedent with its phone line, though, as the base iPhone 17 already ships with a 120 Hz display, undercutting the idea that ProMotion is strictly reserved for the Pro-level hardware. Still, whether the fixed refresh rate LTPS display has been chosen because of cost, panel supply, or product segmentation considerations, the iPad mini 8 could be a hard sell with its 60 Hz panel, OLED display technology or not.
