Apple Vision Pro will launch in China sometime in 2024
Despite a tenuous launch in the United States, Apple's Vision Pro headset enjoyed a mostly positive debut in February. Apple hopes to replicate that success across the Pacific sometime later this year.
Announced through a Weibo account run by China's state media, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the Vision Pro headset will launch in China at some point in this calendar year. This announcement came during Cook's recent visit to the country.
The Vision Pro is an augmented-reality (AR)/mixed-reality (MR) headset that overlays apps, displays, and information onto real-world objects, blending the headset's interface into reality. The headset launched on February 2, 2024, starting at $3499. The headset is powered by Apple's M2 processor, which is coupled with the company's R1 sensor processor. The headset ships with either 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB of storage space.
The Vision Pro was hailed for its innovative control scheme upon its release. However, it hit some bumps with consumers who found some flaws with the headset. The Vision Pro sold roughly 200,000 units during its pre-order period. Apple has yet to release current sales numbers.
The Vision Pro may struggle in China, which is becoming increasingly wary of technology from the United States. Tepid launch sales of the iPhone 15 (available unlocked and renewed on Amazon for $685.45) saw a drop of 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14 during its first 17 days. However, the Apple brand overall is steadily gaining traction in the country, largely due to aggressive discounts and marketing tactics. The time to launch Vision Pro in China may be right now, although the headset faces stiff competition as new VR and AR headsets are launched both in China and abroad every week.
