Absolutely. The $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro went from being a questionable proposition in the previous generation to a solid value. The M4 Pro, meanwhile, is a huge step forward in just about every performance indicator: the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. Meanwhile, the other quality of life upgrades, such as the improved webcam, Thunderbolt 5, even longer battery life, and brighter screen, all sweeten the deal and cement the MacBook Pro as the absolute highest-tier laptop you can buy that’s still somehow worth the money despite how expensive it is. I haven’t tested every configuration yet, of course — no one has yet.

More powerful than before, more flexible; its most potent chips, paired with its best connectivity, and its most pleasant powerful. Forgive me, then, if I'm far more excited about how real, flesh-and-blood people tap the potency on offer. As usual, life on the bleeding edge may leave you waiting for everything else to catch up. You're paying, after all, for longevity: there aren't really all that many Thunderbolt 5 peripherals out there, for example, but at least your Mac will be ready for them. In the meantime, you're also paying for the joy of shaving a little time off each photo and video export, each render, and each compile. For mainstream users, the M4 Pro is probably the sweet spot: more than enough grunt, but with less sticker shock.

I strongly considered giving the 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro a perfect score, since the computer on my desk right now is basically perfect. Other than the unending need for more performance, there's very little that can be improved here. If you don't like macOS or need Windows or Linux, then it doesn't matter how good the MacBook is otherwise, but if you want what's likely one of the best laptops ever made, then this is it. The base model M4 MacBook Pro loses much of its shine, as do the more expensive models in this range, but this specific $1999 machine seems almost too good to be true. What does hurt the score circumstantially is Apple's continued practice of asking for extraordinary amounts of money to upgrade RAM and storage. Luckily, the laptop's base specifications are plenty for almost everyone, so likely you won't feel the need to upgrade unless you have a specific reason for it.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro 14 is the perfect general purpose laptop I have tried. Yet, I have two (minor) gripes. One, despite its great hardware, including a powerful GPU, the lack of AAA games continues to keep the MacBook Pro from realising its full-potential for certain users. It is a great machine for work, and a great general-purpose laptop. But lack of popular AAA games means it is missing some fun quotient. Apple is working on improving the game library on Mac — Resident Evil games for example — but it is not there yet. And two, some of the upgrades seem overly expensive. For example, the nano-texture display. Or extra RAM and storage. At the same time, the Apple Silicon is so good that it has created a problem of plenty for MacBooks.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro 14 is the perfect general purpose laptop I have tried. Yet, I have two (minor) gripes. One, despite its great hardware, including a powerful GPU, the lack of AAA games continues to keep the MacBook Pro from realising its full-potential for certain users. It is a great machine for work, and a great general-purpose laptop. But lack of popular AAA games means it is missing some fun quotient. Apple is working on improving the game library on Mac — Resident Evil games for example — but it is not there yet. And two, some of the upgrades seem overly expensive. For example, the nano-texture display. Or extra RAM and storage. At the same time, the Apple Silicon is so good that it has created a problem of plenty for MacBooks.

You get fantastic performance from the M4 chip, useful Apple Intelligence features (though you’ll have to be patient as more roll out), a better webcam and obscenely long battery life. It’s just too bad my favorite feature — the nano-texture display — costs $150 more. I do have a few nitpicks at the $1,949 price of my review unit. First, the SSD performance is slightly behind the competition. And if you’re into gaming you may want to step up to a beefier M4 Pro model with a 16-core or 20-core GPU, compared to the 10-core GPU on the base model. Overall, though, the M4 MacBook Pro is the laptop I’d buy with my own money. And it’s one of the best laptops you can buy, period.

The MacBook Pro M4 is yet another top-notch laptop from Apple. It's supremely powerful, has an even better screen - we’d highly recommend adding that nano-texture - and will outlast all of the firm's previous portable PCs when it comes to battery life. There's no longer a premium for choosing the Space Black version and things could get even better when Apple Intelligence arrives in December. A touch screen would still be a welcome addition, the MacBook can still get very expensive and there's no big design refresh again this year. We'd also say that those with M2 or M3 machines probably don't need to switch unless they have serious professional workflows and their laptops are struggling. But if you have an older Intel machine that's running out of steam then you’ll struggle to believe how much better it is. The MacBook Pro is still mighty and it’s now even better than before. I’m grateful that Apple increased its entry-level memory, brought parity to the MacBook Pro’s USB-C port count and also increased the speed of those ports for select models as well. To have this all in a MacBook whose entry-level price stayed flat year over year and has slightly improved performance? I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. It’s just too bad my favorite feature — the nano-texture display — costs $150 more. I do have a few nitpicks at the $1,949 price of my review unit. First, the SSD performance is slightly behind the competition. And if you’re into gaming you may want to step up to a beefier M4 Pro model with a 16-core or 20-core GPU, compared to the 10-core GPU on the base model. This time last year, Apple’s “Scary Fast” event introduced the M3 silicon chip powering its line of MacBooks and iMacs, and just a little over six months later, it debuted the M4 for the iPad line. Launching a new chip for a new refresh of devices is nothing new, and the debut of the M4 Pro and M4 Max on the MacBook Pro is pretty much a given, but even as consumers have come to expect that each new wave of processors are bound to outperform last generation’s model, the American company had one ace up its sleeve that pretty much flew under everyone’s radar.

MacBook Pro M4 Review: Speed demon

The MacBook Pro has been stellar since 2021, and now that it’s got a new screen option and a faster chip, it’s a lot better than I expected. I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

Apple M4 Pro 20-Core GPU: An integrated graphics adapter designed by Apple that's built into the 14-core Apple M4 Pro SoC. It features 20 "cores" and has access to at least 24 GB of fast 273 GB/s LPDDR5x on-package RAM depending on the configuration. Its gaming performance is at least as good as that of the GTX 1660 Ti Laptop. When under heavy CPU and GPU load, the iGPU consumes just slightly over 30 W according to monitoring software.
Apple M4 Pro 16-Core GPU: An integrated graphics card from Apple, which is integrated into the 12-core SoC Apple M4 Pro. It has 16 of the 20 GPU cores and, depending on the configuration, has access to at least 24 GB of fast LPDDR5x memory (unified memory) with 273 GB/s in the chip.
Apple M4 Max 32-Core GPU: A pretty fast integrated graphics adapter designed by Apple that's built into the 14-core Apple M4 Max SoC. It features 32 "cores" and has access to at least 36 GB of fast 410 GB/s LPDDR5x on-package RAM depending on the configuration. Its gaming performance is set to be about as good as that of the RTX 4050 Laptop.
Apple M4 10-Core GPU: A graphics adapter built into the 9-core and 10-core Apple M4 processors that has direct access to fast on-package LPDDR5x-7500 RAM (120 GB/s bandwidth) as well as hardware support for ray tracing and mesh shading and other modern technologies. It appears its real-world performance is almost as good as the GeForce GTX 1650 Laptop. M4-powered iPad Pros will be much slower in long-term GPU-intensive workloads than M4 iMacs, Mac minis and MacBook Pros due to the lack of proper cooling.

M4 Max (14 cores): A powerful ARM architecture processor (SoC) that debuted in Sep 2024. It features 10 performance CPU cores along with 4 efficient cores. The 32-core M4 GPU and at least 36 GB of fast 410 GB/s LPDDR5x on-package memory are included as well, as is USB 4 and Thunderbolt 5 support. The CPU portion of the SoC is set to be just slightly faster than the 16-core M3 Max whereas the iGPU could be as fast as the RTX 4050 Laptop in games. The TDP power target is most likely ~85 W.
M4 (10 cores): An impressively fast ARM architecture processor (SoC) sporting 4 performance and 6 efficient CPU cores along with a 16-core neural engine and a 10-core GPU with hardware RT support and other modern features. On-package 7500 MT/s LPDDR5x RAM, USB 4 support and Thunderbolt 4 support are onboard as well. The M4 debuted in May 2024 as part of an iPad launch event; it is around 10% to 20% faster than the M3 (10-core GPU) chip. Its power consumption differs vastly depending on the system; in Mac minis, it consumes up to 40 W but in iPads, anything above 14 W is off limits.
