Apple has updated its MacBook Pro 14 and aside from the new M4 Pro SoC that is now even faster, it also comes with the option to select a matte display. Furthermore, its webcam has been bumped from 2 MP up to 12 MP and for the first time, its ports include Thunderbolt 5.
Apple has presented its new MacBook Pro models featuring the new M4 processor generation and we have taken a look at the new M4 Pro SoC. Aside from its pure performance, we are interested in how efficient it is. Has Apple managed to further extend its lead over Qualcomm, AMD and Intel?

The base-level MacBook Pro M4 14-inch is a powerful, beautifully made laptop with huge battery life, but when you start adding extras like a bigger SSD, more RAM or a faster processor, the costs can spiral out of control. It’s further complicated by the choice of regular M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max processors, and the maximum amount of RAM you can have is governed by your choice of processor. It’s best to think of the MacBook Pro M4 14-inch not as a single computer but a sub-range within the Apple ecosystem, and to choose exactly the upgrades you need and no more.

The Apple MacBook Pro 14 is a pricey well-built machine with powerful hardware. The M4 CPU maintains a rock-solid P and E core clock of 3.92 GHz / 2.59 GHz no matter the load. This, combined with the color-accurate mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display makes the machine a great choice for wealthy professionals who are constantly on the go. The panel impresses with 605 nits of max indoor brightness and full sRGB and Display P3 coverage. The optional Nano-texture display (ergo, it transforms the screen into a matte panel) is worth the money, especially if your workspace is close to windows and the sunlight directly reaches the display. The keyboard feels great for typing despite the short-ish key travel.

Frankly, these laptops are exceptional. They’re what we expect from MacBooks designed for creative professionals, but so were each of their direct predecessors — and just like their M1, M2, and M3 forebears, they get quite expensive. The base M4 MacBook Pro starting at $1,599 is the Pro of the people. But an M4 Pro is the logical choice for more demanding professionals — especially since it’s where the 16-inch screen comes in for those who prefer larger displays. The base 24GB / 512GB M4 Pro, at $1,999 for a 14-inch or $2,499 for a 16-inch, is going to be fine for a large swath of creators, especially since the 16-inch nets you a 14-core CPU like the one we’ve tested here.

Absolutely. The $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro went from being a questionable proposition in the previous generation to a solid value. The M4 Pro, meanwhile, is a huge step forward in just about every performance indicator: the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. Meanwhile, the other quality of life upgrades, such as the improved webcam, Thunderbolt 5, even longer battery life, and brighter screen, all sweeten the deal and cement the MacBook Pro as the absolute highest-tier laptop you can buy that’s still somehow worth the money despite how expensive it is. I haven’t tested every configuration yet, of course — no one has yet.

I’m not saying Mac devotees should necessarily tear their gaze away from theM4 MacBook Pro range. These laptops will be faster than ever, have better battery life than before and will still be the best machines for heavy duty creative workloads. But for anyone who just wants a fast, reliable laptop that lasts for ages – the price may be too high and the standard specification too low to justify continuing to splash out.

The irony, here, is that Apple has made a MacBook Pro that's arguably a creative human's dream. More powerful than before, more flexible; its most potent chips, paired with its best connectivity, and its most pleasant powerful. Forgive me, then, if I'm far more excited about how real, flesh-and-blood people tap the potency on offer. As usual, life on the bleeding edge may leave you waiting for everything else to catch up. You're paying, after all, for longevity: there aren't really all that many Thunderbolt 5 peripherals out there, for example, but at least your Mac will be ready for them. In the meantime, you're also paying for the joy of shaving a little time off each photo and video export, each render, and each compile. For mainstream users, the M4 Pro is probably the sweet spot: more than enough grunt, but with less sticker shock.

Even though there’s no question that the newest MacBook Pros are more powerful and have better features, my buying advice remains the same. If you already own an Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, ask yourself if you have already reached its limits and if the newest M4 chips can make a significant improvement to your workflow. For 99% of these people, I’m guessing the new MacBook Pros are nice to have, not a need to have. Folks still using an Intel-based Mac can and should upgrade without hesitation. Why haven’t you upgraded already? Should you consider a base model 14-inch MacBook Pro over a MacBook Air? I think you definitely should if your budget allows for it and you don't mind the extra heft.

Last year, Apple offered its MacBook Pro 14 with the regular M3 SoC for the first time—the same one as in the MacBook Air models. This year's update brings the new M4 SoC with significantly more performance and improved connectivity.

I strongly considered giving the 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro a perfect score, since the computer on my desk right now is basically perfect. Other than the unending need for more performance, there's very little that can be improved here. If you don't like macOS or need Windows or Linux, then it doesn't matter how good the MacBook is otherwise, but if you want what's likely one of the best laptops ever made, then this is it. The base model M4 MacBook Pro loses much of its shine, as do the more expensive models in this range, but this specific $1999 machine seems almost too good to be true. What does hurt the score circumstantially is Apple's continued practice of asking for extraordinary amounts of money to upgrade RAM and storage. Luckily, the laptop's base specifications are plenty for almost everyone, so likely you won't feel the need to upgrade unless you have a specific reason for it.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 offers great performance at a good price point. The CPU performance is absolutely amazing and the battery life is insanely long. It’s one key weakness is clearly its GPU performance, which makes it even more enticing to move up to the M4 Pro variant given the pricing. However, if you’re not looking to do anything too heavy, this one will serve you well as is.

The MacBook Pro M4 doesn’t come cheap, but for what it offers, it’s worth every penny. Apple has once again delivered a laptop that combines timeless design, premium build quality, and performance that sets the bar for others. If you’re a content creator looking for a powerful, portable machine, the M4 MacBook Pro deserves a serious look — especially if it fits your budget. This year’s M4 series of Apple Silicon this year is mighty impressive, delivering exceptional performance and efficiency. Whether you’re editing videos, designing graphics, or juggling multiple demanding applications, this laptop doesn’t miss a beat. The addition of Apple Intelligence features, though still rolling out, promises to make workflows even smarter and more seamless.

A literally perfect MacBook Pro would have infinite battery life, no weight, and come for free. In the real world, the M4 MacBook Pro is as close to perfect as you can possibly get. Its performance is incredible, its battery life huge, and its design the most premium you can get. I can already imagine the comments — biased Apple fanboy. I’m biased towards quality, and the M4 MacBook Pro is higher quality than any laptop ever released. That doesn’t mean you should buy it — it’s still expensive, and most average users won’t need to pay more than the price of the MacBook Air for what’s on offer by the MacBook Pro. But, if you are a demanding user or simply have cash to burn, the MacBook Pro is the laptop for you.

The Apple MacBook Pro (M4, 2024) won't surprise anyone who's been near one of its predecessors. It's incredibly well built, the screen is predictably great and it's loaded with a bunch of ease-of-use features for anyone, plus the addition of Apple Intelligence adds an AI-shaped layer to the experience of having one. But 3D and moving-image processing is disappointing for such a high-end (and expensive) laptop, so if you work with 3D, heavy graphic design or video rendering, you need to step up to the M4 Pro or Max chips.

Every year when a new MacBook comes out I get questions from regular users, much like me, asking if it is time for them to upgrade. My answers have started changing over the past couple of years. With the MacBook Pro powered by the new M4, I am not sure if this makes sense for the average user, especially now when MacBook Airs too are powered by M series chips. But if you do anything creative that needs a lot of processing like video editing, 3D modeling, or even top-end gaming, there is nothing better out there. And given how much stress you are planning to offload on the device, you have the option of choosing the chipset that can manage your workload. With prices starting at Rs 1,69,900, the MacBook Pro M4 now stands tall as the most powerful laptop you can own. If you are on a MacBook that is still running on Intel chips, it is a no-brainer to upgrade now, since the promise of AI is closer than ever before.

The M4 MacBook Pro combines Apple’s new M4 chipset, a stunning 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, and up to 22 hours of battery life, making it a powerhouse for professionals and students alike. It adds practical upgrades like an extra USB-C port and a 12MP ultrawide camera with CenterStage, enhancing usability without overhauling the design. While the improvements may not justify an upgrade for current Apple Silicon users, the base M4 model offers unmatched performance, battery life, and build quality, solidifying its place as the best laptop you can buy right now.

Rarely has it made so much sense to go for the basic MacBook Pro model! Thanks to the standard 16 GB of unified RAM and 512 GB of internal memory, you can buy a mobile workstation suitable for everyday use for $1,599. Of course, this is still a lot of money, but even the base model we reviewed offers an exceptionally good price-to-performance ratio. As a high-end laptop, the MacBook Pro hardly left anything to be desired. The display is even brighter than in the previous model, apparently uses better technology with Quantom Dot, and can now be configured with nano-texture glass. The fact that Apple offers anti-glare displays in all configurations is fair and I like it better than the current iMac with M4 SoC. This makes the MacBook Pro much more suitable for working outdoors, which is extremely welcome.

For the same price as last year's MacBook Pro models, the M4 variants -- particularly the base configuration -- offer notable upgrades in performance, utility, and battery life. The introduction of Thunderbolt 5 ports, an M4 processor that's better built for machine learning, a more capable webcam, and a brighter display funnel into a form factor that should play well with office workers, digital nomads, students, professional creatives, and more. For most users, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is the way to go. If you need more internal storage than the 512GB, bumping up to the 1TB tier for $200 is not the worst idea. Beyond that, I'd advise picking up an external SSD, which gives you more storage than what Apple does and for significantly less money.

There is no doubt that the MacBook Pro 14 is the perfect general purpose laptop I have tried. Yet, I have two (minor) gripes. One, despite its great hardware, including a powerful GPU, the lack of AAA games continues to keep the MacBook Pro from realising its full-potential for certain users. It is a great machine for work, and a great general-purpose laptop. But lack of popular AAA games means it is missing some fun quotient. Apple is working on improving the game library on Mac — Resident Evil games for example — but it is not there yet. And two, some of the upgrades seem overly expensive. For example, the nano-texture display. Or extra RAM and storage. At the same time, the Apple Silicon is so good that it has created a problem of plenty for MacBooks.

As a machine for high end creators, there’s no better option than the MacBook Pro. For those of us that don’t need to crunch through huge audio and video files, it’s still a great option. Arguably it’s more machine than you’ll ever need – I know my general use case will barely challenge even the standard M4 model, let alone the M4 Pro or M4 Max versions. If you have a MacBook Pro M3 or even a MacBook Pro M2, then chances are you don't really need to upgrade yet. Unless you're a power user maxing out that processor, the seconds this chip saves isn't going to change your world. Saying a machine is too powerful is hardly a criticism though, and it does mean that this laptop will last you for many years to come.

The changes that Apple made to the $1,599/£1,599 M4 MacBook Pro not only made it a clear pro laptop (finally), but it also created a package bursting with value. It no longer feels like a compromised laptop, and you get a lot of performance and features for the price. If you consider yourself a pro user–but not really a pro’s pro, per se–the M4 MacBook Pro has a lot to offer.

Taken altogether, there's no doubt the 2024 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro is an excellent base-level Mac. As the step-up model between the MacBook Air and the more capable Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max silicon, the M4 model doesn't feel like the entry-level member of the family. Instead, it feels like a premium top performer. It would take top honors if it weren't launching alongside the even more capable 14-inch and 16-inch models with those higher-tier versions of the M4. But even without winning an Editors' Choice award, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro commands attention with some subtle new features. From the display-glass option to the addition of Apple Intelligence and a new 12-megapixel webcam, the 2024 MacBook Pro manages to improve upon last year's model. Pretty impressive for a system that looks identical to its predecessor.

The MacBook Pro M4 is pretty close to the perfect laptop. You get fantastic performance from the M4 chip, useful Apple Intelligence features (though you’ll have to be patient as more roll out), a better webcam and obscenely long battery life. It’s just too bad my favorite feature — the nano-texture display — costs $150 more. I do have a few nitpicks at the $1,949 price of my review unit. First, the SSD performance is slightly behind the competition. And if you’re into gaming you may want to step up to a beefier M4 Pro model with a 16-core or 20-core GPU, compared to the 10-core GPU on the base model. Overall, though, the M4 MacBook Pro is the laptop I’d buy with my own money. And it’s one of the best laptops you can buy, period.

Apple's MacBook Pro 14-inch M4 is the full package, a near-perfect blend of price, performance, and utility. The M4 is the base edition of the newest and most powerful generation of Apple silicon (it's the same chip that's already running in the iPad Pro 13-inch) but it's still bursting with power, and more than capable of doing most of the heavy-lifting you want from a pro-level portable machine, as ready to edit raw photos and 4K video as it is to stand in as an able gaming console. I've long been a fan of the MacBook Pro design, especially since Apple refined it by removing the Touch Bar, a neat innovation that never reached its full potential. My M4 Pro review unit, supplied by Apple, is a sleek-looking Space Black that's both elegant and wonderfully functional.

Do you need a gaming laptop? Windows exclusive software? A budget laptop? The thinnest and lightest laptop possible? Ok, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 probably isn't the best choice for you. If you didn't fall into one of the categories above, this laptop belongs on your shortlist. Apple's performance to efficiency has been honed to a razor's edge with the M4 and with the $1,599 base model now offering a perfectly reasonable set of specs for most people, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 is legitimately a value. There's not another laptop in this price range that can match up across the board with the 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 in performance and efficiency, let alone its brilliant display, speakers, and webcam.

The cheapest M4 MacBook Pro costs $1,599 — $100 more than a 15-inch MacBook Air with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and equivalent memory and storage. (The Airs still start at 256GB; it costs $200 to upgrade to 512GB.) For the price, you get significantly better performance, more and faster Thunderbolt ports, a better-quality screen that’s higher resolution with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, two more speakers, and a better webcam. All these upgrades and quality-of-life improvements really add up — and for a lot of people, they’re worth the money. Of course, if you want the anti-glare screen and 1TB of storage like our test unit, that puts you at $1,949, and now you’re just $50 away from the upgraded MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro processor, faster storage, more cores, 24GB of RAM, and Thunderbolt 5 ports — or $200 away if you want the nano-texture screen upgrade again.

That doesn't mean you can't game on a MacBook. In one of the few recent, natively running games, Hades 2, the MacBook 14, with its low GPU core count, consistently hit 120fps for me. It might have been able to hit higher, but the display only supports either fixed refresh rates up to 60Hz or variable rate ProMotion, which caps it at 120Hz. In order to play at higher frame rates, you have to connect to an external monitor -- which is also on my list of things to test before finalizing my reviews.

Apple’s M4 MacBook Pro series is a special set of laptops. Apple isn’t just iterating on performance, it is seriously pushing the envelope year-on-year. Can it keep up with this cadence? Time will tell, but it feels like in a decade’s time, the M14 won’t offer the same performance gains. As I’ve said before, the main thing you need to comsider when buying a MacBook Pro is whether you actually need this level of power. While the MacBook Air M2 isn’t favoured by some regular Pro users, it is more than good enough to do what most traditional MacBook Pro users need. Essentially, the Pro is a high-end machine for high-end tasks.

The consensus among reviewers is that while this update may not be revolutionary, it meaningfully improves an already excellent laptop line. Six Colors summarizes that Apple has successfully kept “moving it forward with a combination of new features and ongoing performance boosts.” The legitimization of the base model and significant performance gains in the Pro and Max variants make this a compelling upgrade for users of older MacBooks, though perhaps less essential for M2 or M3 owners. Engadget concludes that these are simply “the best MacBook Pros yet,” while CNN confidently states the M4 MacBook Pro “will be one of your favorite laptops ever” for those in the market for a professional-grade laptop.

The MacBook Pro M4 is yet another top-notch laptop from Apple. It's supremely powerful, has an even better screen - we’d highly recommend adding that nano-texture - and will outlast all of the firm's previous portable PCs when it comes to battery life. There's no longer a premium for choosing the Space Black version and things could get even better when Apple Intelligence arrives in December. A touch screen would still be a welcome addition, the MacBook can still get very expensive and there's no big design refresh again this year. We'd also say that those with M2 or M3 machines probably don't need to switch unless they have serious professional workflows and their laptops are struggling. But if you have an older Intel machine that's running out of steam then you’ll struggle to believe how much better it is. The MacBook Pro is still mighty and it’s now even better than before. Just make sure you need all that power before tapping the buy button.

With the exception of the folks who are frustrated by the reflection and glare in their MacBook Pro’s screens, the MacBook Pro M4 is less a must-get than it is an improved option over last year’s models. I’m grateful that Apple increased its entry-level memory, brought parity to the MacBook Pro’s USB-C port count and also increased the speed of those ports for select models as well. To have this all in a MacBook whose entry-level price stayed flat year over year and has slightly improved performance? There’s no way I can argue that the MacBook Pro M4 isn’t a good upgrade, especially when Apple’s MacBook Pros continue to be great values based on their longevity and build quality.

It’s scary fast how much, and how little can change in 12 months. This time last year, Apple’s “Scary Fast” event introduced the M3 silicon chip powering its line of MacBooks and iMacs, and just a little over six months later, it debuted the M4 for the iPad line. Launching a new chip for a new refresh of devices is nothing new, and the debut of the M4 Pro and M4 Max on the MacBook Pro is pretty much a given, but even as consumers have come to expect that each new wave of processors are bound to outperform last generation’s model, the American company had one ace up its sleeve that pretty much flew under everyone’s radar.

The MacBook Pro has been stellar since 2021, and now that it’s got a new screen option and a faster chip, it’s a lot better than I expected. I don’t think anyone with an M2 or M3 Pro will need to upgrade immediately unless they’re constantly working outside in the sun. However, I think people with M1 Pros who feel like they could use a little more power will be pleased with the M4 Pro since it’s so much more instantaneous than the 2021 version. Personally, since I mainly edit smaller batches of photos and mid-level videos for YouTube, I think the M1 Pro I have still has enough power that I wouldn’t complain about it. However, I did notice and appreciate the extra speed the M4 offers.

The 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro basically said, "In your face!" to Windows laptops after they made noise with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip this year. From its impressive battery life to its monstrous M4 chip performance, this machine is built to dominate. But let’s be real — at a starting price of $1,599, it’s an investment that’s not for the faint of heart. If you’re a creative professional who thrives on serious power in a sleek, portable package, this MacBook Pro is your best friend.
