It’s clear from the benchmark results that the people who will clearly benefit from the update to the entry-level 13in MacBook Pro are those in a production environment who rely on apps that take advantage of multiple processing cores. The jump from two to four cores without a jump in price is significant and makes the new laptop an attractive investment.

Don’t expect it to feel like anything has really changed compared to the 2018 model - the tweaked keyboard, brighter screen, new processors and must-have-it Touch Bar don't make this Mac upgrade worthy for existing users. That said, it's a great entry point if you're looking to invest in a workhorse machine, reinforcing why this iconic laptop has been so successful over the years.

In fact, in purely Mac terms, this new MacBook Pro now gives you quite the conundrum – should you splash out an extra 200 quid over an equivalent Air? Forget the Touch Bar (the Air has Touch ID), and the weight difference – unless you can genuinely get worked up about 120g, in which case congrats on your new job replacing the scales at Tesco. For that additional outlay, what you’re really getting is a superior display, a longer-lasting battery, and that quad-core i5. For undemanding users, none of that matters much, and the Air is the better buy; for everyone else choosing between Apple’s two most affordable portable Macs, go for the entry-level Pro.

This is where we are in the evolution of Apple's laptops. The best MacBook for most people costs $1,299. You can complain about the "Apple Tax," but I'm telling you that this system is a better value than the MacBook Air at $1,099. You get a much faster processor, brighter display and considerably longer battery life for your money.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar delivers even faster performance and a slightly better keyboard, but the battery life could be better.

Apple has long avoided adding touch capabilities to macOS, instead preferring to let its unique and controversial Touch Bar serve as an alternative touch-input method. The company appears to be doubling down on this strategy by now adding this touch-enabled secondary display to the entry-level MacBook Pro, too. (It was formerly reserved only for higher-end models.)

If you are willing to go the Windows route, the Dell XPS 13 is still our pick for best overall laptop, as it offers a comfier keyboard, an additional USB-C port and microSD card slot, and a slimmer and sleeker design. Plus, it lasts longer on a charge. But if you're set on macOS, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the one to get.

This update makes picking the right MacBook a lot easier. If your needs are fairly modest, get the Air. But if you plan to push your computer, spend the extra $200 on the Pro. It'll get you far better performance and still won't break the bank. The usual MacBook caveats still apply; if you had problems with the keyboard or port selection before, that hasn't changed. But a week ago, it was foolish to recommend that anyone buy the entry-level MacBook Pro. Now it might be the best all-around laptop Apple sells.

Overall, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the Apple laptop I would buy for myself, even with its $1,799 starting price. It gives me all the power I could want, a brilliant display, great audio and an improved keyboard that should prove more reliable over time. I also continue to appreciate such amenities as Touch ID button and "Hey, Siri"

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
