When it comes to versatile noise-cancelling wireless earbuds for everyday use, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 have always been an easy recommendation, particularly for those who are already in the Apple ecosystem. For many potential buyers, price was the only item on the ‘con’ list. Well, that may no longer be the case – the 2nd gen AirPods Pro have officially hit their lowest price yet on Amazon and Best Buy, retailing for $179 as against their $249 list price.
The AirPods Pro 2’s active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency modes have long been considered among the best by reviewers, having been only recently (and slightly) edged out by the likes of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds and the Sony WF-1000XM5. The newer Adaptive Audio feature intelligently blends both modes to reduce the need for switching and further refine the user experience.
Likewise, Conversation Awareness is a handy feature that lowers the volume and optimises for external voice capture when the wearer starts talking. Personalised spatial audio is also well-executed with dynamic head tracking, albeit somewhat limited in terms of compatible media.
The AirPods Pro 2 were updated last year with a USB-C charging case (with MagSafe wireless charging), IP54 dust and water resistance and lossless audio support (but only with the Apple Vision Pro headset). Battery runtime on the earphones is 6 hours when listening to media.
Based on the typical 3-year life cycle for AirPods models, the AirPods Pro 2, launched in September 2022, are still some way away from their next major update which, according to Mark Gurman, should happen sometime in 2025. That makes picking up a pair on discount right now an easier decision, as there’s little chance of their becoming outdated immediately.
Competing with the AirPods Pro 2 in terms of performance and features are the aforementioned Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (the reigning ANC champion) and the Sony WF-1000XM5, as well as the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 (praised for their stellar audio quality) and the Jabra Elite 10 (known for their excellent fit and comfort). With the current discount undercutting the competition on price, choosing the AirPods Pro 2 is a no-brainer, provided one isn't completely out of the Apple ecosystem.
