Aorus X5
The powerful Aorus X5 certainly delivers when it comes to pure gaming performance. At just 2.5 kg, the laptop is lightweight and super thin in profile. Design is kept fairly discreet with clean angled lines throughout the solidly built chassis. There is a full size tile-style keyboard with macro capabilities and a glossy responsive touchpad. The Aorus X5 comes in dark grey and has 2 rear vents that look like engine ports ensuring optimal cooling. Users will definitely appreciate the minimalistic design approach of the device. The Windows 8.1 laptop comes with stellar specifications as expected of a gaming laptop. On-board is an Intel Core i7-5700HQ quad core processor clocked at 2.7 Ghz, up to 32 GB of 1866 DDR3L RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 965M SLI with 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM. This dual GPU setup coupled with the high-end CPU and RAM will have no issues dealing with current and near future gaming titles. Storage on the Aorus X5 can be configured to support a quadruple-storage system. Options range from 128 GB to 512 GB M.2 SSD and 500 GB to 2 TB HDD combinations. Display on the laptop is a beautiful 15.6inch WQHD+ IPS panel with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. SLI and G-SYNC. Aorus may be less than a couple years old, but the manufacturer already has some of the thinnest gaming notebooks with the latest hardware and features in the market. Are the GTX 965M SLI GPUs and 2880 x 1620 resolution G-SYNC screen the perfect match?

It hasn't taken long for Aorus to establish itself as a big-name purveyor of extreme gaming laptops. The Aorus X5 is in many ways a technical marvel, but it feels like a proof of concept and having demonstrated a new standard in mobile gaming, has us looking forward to a v2 revision touting a perfected trackpad, a single powerful GPU and greater longevity.

A lot of vendors were hellbent on capitalising on PC's huge eSports industry at Computex this year, and while it's relatively simple to get League of Legends or Counter-Strike running on a laptop with all streaming functionality switched to 'go', you'll want something like an X5 if you want to play, say, The Witcher 3 at max settings in the park.

One is better than two. The refreshed X5 shows that a single more powerful GPU is the better choice against two weaker GPUs in SLI.

Aorus continues to create some of the sleekest, albeit most expensive gaming laptops on the block. For $2,299, gamers get a bona fide powerhouse that can produce frame rates on a par with more beastly 17-inch rigs -- provided the resolution's set to 1080p. When you're not gaming, the laptop can function as a kickass productivity machine, or just a gorgeous way to watch 4K movies.

This notebook is marred by two glaring issues. The bottom of the chassis and parts of the top get too hot to the touch while gaming. It’s understandable to use the chassis as a heatsink, though we think this notebook takes it to the excess. Secondly, the fans are too loud at top RPM and have a highly distinct whine. Even though the X5S has a rather decent pair of speakers, we found ourselves reverting to headphones to hear quieter sounds in games. These issues are both sacrifices made to achieve such a thin and light design. You’ll have to decide whether the trade-offs are worthwhile.

The Aorus X5S v5 is an excellent machine that offers tons of gamer-specific features beyond just its pretty screen and processing power. The bright, colorful display is adequately powered, and it handles productivity applications as easily as gaming. Part of the fun for me was seeing just how great my older games looked with their settings and resolution turned to the max.

Of course, temperature problems aren’t unusual in gaming laptops, and I’d still happily sit down and play games on the X5s for hours at a time. At this price, though, I expect perfection, so the Aorus X5s just misses out on that elusive fifth star. Still, if you have the funds and are after one of the most distinctive and powerful gaming laptops money can buy, then the Aorus X5s Camo certainly won’t disappoint.

When we reviewed the special edition Aorus X5S v5 Camo back in April, we came away with the feeling that the laptop's strengths were largely negated by the lack of next-gen GPUs. Fast forward a few months and Nvidia has stepped forward to fill the void with the GeForce GTX 10-series. Aorus has responded quickly and the refreshed X5 v6 races out of the gate with a Core i7-6820HK processor and GeForce GTX 1070 graphics allied to a high-resolution 3K WQHD+ display.

The specs on the X5V6 are certainly impressive for a gaming laptop, but it’s not alone in that. What makes the X5V6 so desirable is the combination of the power of the components and the elegant and light case that houses them. The X5V6 is perfect for someone who wants a portable, light laptop that doesn’t scream “I’m a gamer!” while still being able to keep up with other high end gaming laptops.

4K vs. battery. Aorus has made several improvements since last year's model of the X5: 4K display, Thunderbolt 3 and a Kaby Lake CPU are only a few of the positive additions. Can the X5 v7 improve on its predecessor's rating (83%) or might it even reach pole position among slim gamers? We will try to find out in our review.

To get the Aorus X5 v7’s GTX 1070 gaming experience, you’ll need to pay a hefty premium. GTX 1070 laptops tend to start around the $1,499 to $1,699 mark, but the entry-level X5 v7 costs a whopping $2,399. Of course, you’re getting much better hardware in every regard, though some will certainly find that $900 margin very hard to swallow. We’re not quite hitting GTX 1080 laptop pricing, but this laptop does come pretty close.

Aorus:
This company was founded as a subsidiary of Gigabyte in Tawain in 2014. The logo is a falcon head, since the name Aorus is derived from the ancient Egyptian falcon god Horus. According to employees, the first letter of HORUS was changed to "A" to represent the brand as "A team". Aorus primarily produces gaming laptops as well as computer accessories.
Since the market shares are still low, there are also few reviews. However, the products achieve relatively good ratings (as of 2016).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M SLI: Two GeForce GTX 965M graphics cards in SLI combination.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:
Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
5700HQ: Broadwell-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5600 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6820HK: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7820HK: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.9 - 3.9 GHz. It is the second fastest model of the consumer H-series in the beginning of 2017. The chip also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU clocked at 350 - 1100 MHz and is manufactured in a 14 nm process (improved compared to Skylake). Compared to the Core i7-7820HQ, the 7820HK lacks business features like vPro or TXT support.
Intel Coffee Lake:
i7-8850H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates six processor cores clocked at 2.6 - 4.3 GHz (4.1 GHz with 4 cores, 4 GHz with 6 cores) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++).

2.5 kg:
Usually, old laptops with 14-16 inch display-diagonal weigh as much.
2.676 kg:
In former years, this weight was representative for laptops with a 14-16 inch display-diagonal. Nowadays, 17 inch laptops weigh less than that.
82.25%: This rating should be considered to be average. This is because the proportion of notebooks which have a higher rating is approximately equal to the proportion which have a lower rating.
